My son has a 2002 Dakota 3.9L. It runs good when its first started. After it warms up it will stall when you put it in gear. When its at an idle and warm its okay, as sonn as you put any load on it the oil pressure drops and the engine will stall. If you slip it into neutral it will stay running .

You can start by checking the Idle Air Control Valve to make sure it’s clean.

IAC is located at the back of the TB and is held on with two Torx head screws. Get some tb cleaner and clean it off while you have it off. If it sticks replace it. Well i mean it will stick some but you will be able to tell if it is bad.

Took the IAC out, it was all covered in a greasy carbon. Cleaned it off and it seems better. Will take it for a longer ride today and see what happens.
Thanks for the info guys !!

Well . no change for the good anyway. The idle has gotten rougher now and is harder to keep at an idle even when in neutral. It seems to be revving more before shifting as well.

Any input would be great . thanks

any codes? you can turn on and off the key 3 times then the odometer will flash codes. The TP sensor is right above the IAC, maybe that. I paid about $32

Check voltage to the throtle position sensor (tps) like mentioned above. With the key turned to run put the voltmeter in the back black (ground) wire and the middle is the power (red) just poke the probes right into the sensor. Should read close to .75 volts.

Personally I think yor iac is toast. All the symptoms suggest it is out of adjustment. Possibly because you have not driven it enough or that it is ruined.

Well, I actually had the chance to drive it for more than a half hour today. For the first 20 minutes it seemed to run okay. although the idle was going up and down all the time by about 300 RPM. After about 25 minutes the problems really started. The idle would start going up and down by about 600 RPM and if I didn’t pickup the idle manually, it would stall after about 30 seconds. It does this whether it’s in gear or in neutral.

I checked for codes and there are three listed. I listed them below in the order they were displayed. I don’t know if that makes a difference.

P1682
P0138
P1391

I found these on a GM site. But I think that they are the same:

DTC P1682
Spínací obvod zapalování 1 2

DTC P0138
HO2S Circuit High Voltage Sensor 2

Again, off of a GM site:

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P1391
G SENSOR PERFORMANCE

Popis obvodu
The G sensor is a vertical low g-acceleration sensor. By sensing vertical acceleration caused by bumps or pot-holes in the road, the powertrain control module (PCM) can determine if the changes in crankshaft speed are due to engine misfire or are driveline induced. If the G sensor detects a rough road condition, the PCM misfire detection diagnostic will be de-activated. The G sensor at rest output should be between 2.35-2.65 volts (+1G). During a rough road condition, the voltage output can vary between 0.5 volt (-1G) and 4.5 volts (+3G).

Podmínky pro nastavení DTC

* Engine running.
* No vehicle speed.
* G sensor signal indicates greater than 2.5 volts (+1G) or less than 1.5 volts (0G) for one minute.

* Vehicle speed is between 50 km/h and 132 km/h (30 mph and 80 mph).
* G sensor signal changes more than .0002 volts each tenth of a second (changing faster than physically possible).

Akce provedená, když DTC nastaví

* The PCM will illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) after the second consecutive trip in which the fault is detected.
* The PCM will store conditions which were present when the DTC was set as Freeze Frame and in the Failure Records data.
