95 318I. When I put the key in the driver door and turn the key it will only unlock the driver door. Every now and then I can get the passenger side to unlock as well but it will lock and unlock several times before stopping. Is this the actuator that’s the problem. If so do I need to only replace the passenger side one. The rears aren’t unlocking at all but I can manually push them down to lock and they will stay locked. If I try to press the passenger lock down it will immediately unlock. This has been a pain since if the lock is stuck in the lock position then it prevents the car from being started. I know this. But not sure if I need to replace the driver door actuator as well

Door mechanism on passenger side does work since I can open the door when unlocked but this all happens when I lock the doors. It’s to the point now where I can’t even lock them because it might stay locked and not turn over. Then I have to disconnect the battery and reconnect just to bypass security and start the car. Ugh

If you turn the key in any door or the trunk all doors and trunk and gas filler door should lock/unlock.

If you turn the key in the drivers door and nothing else locks or unlocks it’s probably the drivers actuator. If you turn the key in the trunk and nothing happens the trunk actuator is faulty. Same thing for the passenger door. If you press the lock button on any door and it won’t stay down that’s the sign if a faulty actuator.

You may be in a situation where you have to replace them one at a time. It wouldn’t be unheard of to need every actuator replaced. I’ve had it happen on 2 e36s. I’ve owned 5 or 6 e36s. I lose track. all of them needed at least 1 actuator replaced. If you end up replacing the trunk actuator be aware they changed the design between 95-96. The harness connector is very different.

This drove me crazy on my car when I first bought it. I bet one of your actuators are off the mechanism. If ones off the modules search for a position then try to do the operation. But it’s unsuccessful as it’s not actually locking or unlocking a handle this not triggeringvthe lock cylinder switch thus not thinking it’s locked. Then it just circles. I once had my modules back and forth for over five minutes. Found my driver door and was off. Unplugged battery. Unlocked all doors by hand. Plugged battery in. They all worked great from then on.

Not that yours has to be like mine. Could be a bad actuator like fly said! Reminds me that I have a random pre 95 trunk actuator. Odd. They look so. Foreign. (Not as cheap)

When I put the key into the driver door it only unlocks that door. So I guess that actuator works. The passenger side is the one that will go up and down so I assume that one needs to be replaced. The rear doors don’t unlock auto at all however I can manually pull them to unlock and the will stay unlocked so does that mean they will work once I get the front two working. I only got one key when I bought this e36 and it will unlock the driver door but won’t unlock the passenger side or the trunk. Is there a separate key for the trunk or are the locks fried.

If you turn the key in the drivers door and that door locks/unlocks. that is not telling you the drivers actuator is working.

The key cylinder in the outside handle is connected to the locking mechanism with rods. It does not use the actuator to unlock the door the key is inserted into. When you insert the key into the drivers door and turn it a micro switch in the handle assembly is triggered. It sends a signal to the ZKE (body control). The ZKE sends a signal to all the other lock actuators in the car except the one your key is in. The other locks will lock or unlock depending on the direction you turn the key.

There are several possible causes for malfunctioning locks but the most common is faulty actuators.

With everything unlocked. all doors, trunk and gas filler door. insert the key into the drivers door and turn it to lock. Any door, trunk or gas filler door that did nit lock probably has a faulty actuator. Unlock everything again. Now insert the key into the trunk and turn it to lock. You should get the same result except NOW you should see the drivers door lock. If the drivers door doesn’t lock then THAT door probably has a faulty actuator in addition to the others that failed to lock. Repeat this test on the passenger door if you want to. You should get the same results.

Your passenger lock going up and down is a clear indication that you have a faulty actuator in that particular door.

I know some of this contradicts what I said above. Sorry. I had a senior moment. Forgive me.
