Hi! I’m having a problem with my 1996 ford ranger. The key won’t go into the ignition at all. I’ve seen people saying that you can turn the steering wheel but I’ve tried that and also it’s parked on a flat surface. This is my only car and I don’t have a lot of money so Is this something serious? What can I do about this? I had to take an uber taxi to work which costs a lot of money. Since I can’t get the key in I can’t drive it anywhere so I’ll have to have it towed.

Burn your car and it would solve your old car problem

My only suggestion is to wiggle the steering wheel as you try to insert key… Also is there a small button right next to the ignition you can press in? Some vehicles have that to lock the key in

Possibles. 1. Person with other key broke it off in there. 2. You are using the wrong key. 3. A thief broke their ignition turning tool in there. 4. The lock cylinder gave up the ghost and needs replaced.
I would spray some lock cylinder lube in there if I did not see anything stuck in there. The » key» here is to not force anything. Wiggle and pray.

Get a strong light and LOOK into the keyhole. There’s probably something blocking the key from entering. If so that has to come out… If you can’t do this, call a locksmith and ask over phone if they can do this [likely cheaper than having car towed].

all older Ford products have same key cross section — small horizontal bar with descending left and ascending right arms [as you look at the key hole]. If the key you’re using its NOT shaped to fit this — it isn’t the right kind of key at all and will never fit.

greater detail would help — does the key go in part way, but not all the way? Or is it that it won’t fit at all?

ps: if some wanna be car thief tried to break the lock by inserting a tool into the keyhole and [whatever they then do] … Then you’ll likely have to have it towed since the entire ignition mechanism will have to be replaced.

I have the same problem on a 2006 Escape. Key wouldn’t go in at all. After lightly using a screwdriver and trying to move the steering wheel (it’s locked), I can forcefully get the key in. It worked for a while, but then had the same issue.

  • 1997 Ford Ranger 4.0 V6 won’t shift into drive after being driven. Takes longer than should to shift into drive when first started? It will go in reverse fine. First thing in the morning when I leave for work, it will shift into drive on it’s own, but takes a bit longer than it should. After getting it warm, won’t shift into drive at all. I can shift down to 1st or 2nd, then back into drive and it will «pop up» into drive within a second or 2. I also have a ODB2 error P1744 (Torque Converter circuit).
  • How to remove ignition switch Cylinder from 98 ford crown victoria if the ignition cylinder is stuck? I have a 98 crown Victoria. And i used a wrong key by mistake yesterday and now my actual key won’t work. I’ve tried removing the ignition lock cylinder but any video i watch on Youtube tells me to turn the key to replace ignition lock cylinder but i can’t do that because its jammed. I’ve tried jiggling the steering wheel and turning the key but no luck. Pretty sure its the ignition lock cylinder but i can’t get the damn thing out without turning the key
  • Key keeps getting stuck in the ignition? I have a 2008 Ford focus, bought the car for my daughter as a starter car for univesritys and just something instead of using the big truck. The key got stuck twice sense we got it a month ago, but it’s always in the off position. When you turn off the car took the keys out to fill my car with gas then go pay for it, came back out my keys in then they wouldn’t turn until a couple try’s. Why is this?
  • 2000 ford focus, lost ignition key, how can i unlock it to tow to junk? Have door key that unlocks it, no battery in it. Could this be why i can’t unlock the floor shifter?
