I have a brand new T8 Recharge and when I went to turn on the heat for the first time, I was only getting cool air. No heat. The vehicle has 9K mileage and it’s the first time I’ve used the heater since new. Took to dealer and turns out that they needed to replace the HVCH (High Voltage Coolant Heater). Unbelievable considering it’s brand new. Very disappointing and hoping not a sign of things to come. Anyway, dealer fixed promptly and I now have heat.

Seems to be happening a lot with the new ones right off the lot (there are at least two other threads about this). Super weird.

I’ve been waiting 4 weeks for the part. Just submitted a complaint to Volvo tonight

Very common issue currently (tons of threads on this here). Hopefully the new parts they’re using are redesigned.

I work for Volvo, and this is a MAJOR ISSUE. It’s the HVCH (High Voltage Coolant Heater) and they are on a MASSIVE backorder directly from Sweden. We have about 6 cars at our Dealership right now for the same issue. For customer’s experiencing this issue, they can switch out of «pure» mode immediately upon startup and the vehicle will have working heat as a normal gasoline vehicle would. This bypasses the need for the vehicle to use the HVCH to heat the vehicle and forces the vehicle to heat with via the gasoline powered engine. It’s a temporary fix until Volvo produces more of the backordered HVCH’s.

It just sucks that people in colder climates won’t be able to use the hybrid/pure function of the car as it’s intended.
Do you know if the new parts are redesigned? Clearly whatever they have been using is a flawed design.

They can still use «pure» mode once the vehicle is heated for «all electric driving», and the vehicle will have heat in «pure» mode once the engine temperature reaches its normal operating temp. The HVCH heats the vehicle when solely in «pure» mode as it doesn’t get heat from the gasoline engine like a normal vehicle since it’s a mild hybrid.

I suspect Volvo shipped these cars knowing that this was defective. No way all of these cars got through QC without someone testing to see if the HEAT worked. Their supply chain was probably jacked and instead of delaying deliveries, they rolled the dice that they could fix it by winter or that people would be ok to burn gas for heat. I myself am very disappointed in Volvo. I’ve had my 2022 XC90 ER since April and already had two check engine lights/propulsion system services alerts and now a faulty electric heater. Definitely not a car I plan to keep past it’s warranty. Kinda missing my Lexus right now……

I totally agree. I think the plan was to try to swap defective units out starting in the coolest climates and the supply chain was even worse than Volvo thought it was.
Also, I wish they’d just gone with a heat pump like the full EVs. Now that our heat works our electric range is almost cut in half. Not a big deal since I have L2 charging at home and work and happily will burn a bit more electricity to stay warm, but definitely a very inefficient system.

Same issue over here from start w a new xc90 recharge.. and no loaners available. Has anyone still not had heat in power mode at any point, including long drives?
As an aside, I wouldn’t be shocked if this whole thing ended in a class action suit. Too many new vehicles w the issue upon first trial of using heat to claim quality control did their job imo

XC 60 T8 2022 late model also with a defective heater. Nov 21 at the dealer (Northern VA) to confirm issue and they said that there is no timeline yet for the replacement parts. I did get a $1,000 check from the dealer. They said I was the first owner of their many T8 owners with the issue to ask for compensation.
They also completed the ‘Recall of all Volvo T8s in the USA’ by installing the 2.5 software. It supposedly fixes the ‘Turtle’ issue.

Took delivery of my 23 xc90 T8 and realize today that heat isn’t working in hybrid mode. Hoping it’s minor, but gut tells me it’s HVHC. But ridicules. Car has barely over 500 miles.

Our ’22 XC90 heat worked fine last winter and now seems to take a very long time to heat up, consistent with the HVHC obstructing the gas engine heating system. Is it possible a software update at our last oil change screwed up the system operation?
586 příspěvků · Připojeno 2009
The HVCH failure shouldn’t affect the gas engine from heating up. Unlikely that software would kill the coolant heater.
When you say a long time to heat up. Is this in Pure electric mode only? If you get no heat in electric-only, then the heater is bad.
If it’s taking a long time for heat to come on with the gas engine running, there may be something else going on.

We have a 2022 XC90 Recharge. Realized there was problem in fall 22, waited for the parts for a few months. Had the HVCH replaced worked fine end of winter 22/23. Tried the heat last week and it seems like the same issue again. Anyone with a similar problem? If this is a yearly replacement part, I have a major concern.

Yes same here, I have a 2022 XC90 Recharge. This was a problem last year, I waited for the part for 4 months from December to April. Replaced in April. Worked in November this year, and now no heat again (also no remote climate/preheating, so I suspect it’s the same thing)
I have an appointment for tomorrow, but honestly I don’t want a 70k car that has heat broken every winter. I specifically bought it to drive on electric charge around town and go to the mountains to ski in winter, so heat is important to me. Is there anything that can be done?

Do people still have issues? I do (T8 2021) — and the dealership just claims the «Auxiliary heater» has to be on at all times? Is that true?
586 příspěvků · Připojeno 2009
Yes, on the Sensus T8 cars, just leave the Aux Heater toggle on. Doesn’t mean the heater will always be «on», just means that it allows the use of the heater aka HVCH (high voltage coolant heater) when necessary.
If you still don’t get heat in Pure mode with that selection on, you probably have a bad heater.

Makes sense thanks. Unfortunately that cuts the range of the already small 20mile battery to about 10 miles

I’d still probably select if off during the times of year you don’t need it, but yeah, I imagine the non-ER models lose their charge quite a bit faster using electric heat.

We had our HVCH replaced yet again a few weeks ago and they told us «this should be the last time.» We’ve had it done I don’t know how many times. They really don’t want you continuing to bring it back when it’s not working so that you don’t have as many documented issues I believe. We’ve been financially compensated and were told last year we don’t qualify for a buy back after I requested one. I will request a buy back again if we end up with the same problem.
Last week my wife reported her heater wasn’t working in Pure mode two separate times and I had had it. Took it in and they weren’t able to recreate the problem. We shall see what the future holds. Under 9,000 miles. Loaners usually aren’t available unless you want to wait 3 weeks. We are SO SO SO tired of taking this thing into the dealership.
May end up getting rid of it either way after a bit . we had the same issues in our 2019 XC60 T8 as well but the last year we owned it we didn’t have the problem so assumed it was fixed. Wrong.

How do you request buyback? Having the same issues and don’t want to deal with it every winter. I am at 35k miles so warranty will run out some time next winter.

They replaced it for me and haven’t had issues since. Latest software update made it even better.

Volvo deserves to lose all of their business over this issue. It is ridiculous. My 2023 Volvo was repaired for this issue last winter. Apparently, that fix was a temporary one so when I go to turn the heat on again, this winter it is again not working. They never stated that the fix from last winter was temporary. I’m trading this piece of **** in as soon as I can. I am highly disappointed as I loved the car up until this but this type of service and commitment to quality deserves everyone to forget Volvo as an option.

Why would they ever say it’s a temporary fix? Dealers don’t do «temporary» repairs. They replaced the part, which is what literally any other car brand dealer would do. It just so happens that Volvo is dealing with a high rate of unreliability with this particular part. It’s not going unnoticed by them. Plus, your next repair is still under warranty. I know it takes time away from you, but your sentiment seems extremely dramatic considering you said you love the car otherwise. You’re gonna be disappointed with any car it sounds like. If every car brand deserved to lose all their business over a repeating issue, there would be no car manufacturers.
