BMW’s latest super sedan is a force to be reckoned with, and here’s why you need to drive one.
Since the first-ever BMW M5 – the E28 – was released to the public back in 1984, the M5 name has been synonymous with the term super sedan, or even supercar slayer. Since the E28, most M5s have inhabited glorious V8 engines under their hoods, with the exception of the E60 M5 that came fitted with a 5.0-liter V10 of course. The Bavarian team has worked non-stop to create the most bewildering sedan ever to roam public roads, and the latest F90 is their most powerful creation yet.
The original F90 M5 made its debut in 2017, and the Competition variant followed soon after which produced more power and drove even more hardcore. The 2021 model year BMW 5 Series received a facelift which they called the LCI, although the initial F90 and the facelift share the same performance figures, they feel vastly different – and that’s the one we’d recommend getting behind the wheel of.
10 Belligerent V8 Engine
Let’s start off by talking about the M5 Competition’s engine. Not only does it follow the lineage of its ancestors by having a powerful V8 tucked underneath its hood, but because it has two turbochargers attached to its 4.4-liter V8, it produces a whopping 617 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.
In today’s day and age, most modern cars are neutered when it comes down to the sounds they make, but we’re happy to say, this BMW V8’s roar doesn’t conform to those rules – well at least when listening to it.
9 Perplexing Acceleration
Now that we’ve thrown some statistics at you, let’s see how well these figures translate into the real world. Do keep in mind, that all M5 Competition models come fitted with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, and its powertrain is mated to a lightning-fast eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.
When launch mode is initialed, and the pedal is pressed all the way down, the facelifted M5 Comp can reach 60 mph from a stop in a mere 2.8 seconds – that’s almost quick as a Lamborghini Huracan Tecnica!
8 Vlk v ovčím oblečení
Arguably the M5’s most praised feat is that it manages to accomplish all of these insane performance figures, and have an enjoyable drive without sacrificing an ounce of practicality you’d expect a four-door luxury saloon to have. excluding fuel consumption of course.
At its heart, it still remains a luxury vehicle suitable for comfortably seating 5 passengers, and their luggage, but when needed, the M5 Comp will decimate almost anything from a traffic light.
7 Rear-Biased xDrive, With A Drift Mode
BMWs are known for being tail-happy, that’s no secret, that’s why almost all of their models sued to be fitted with rear-wheel-drive drivetrains after all. However, since they introduced their xDrive all-wheel-drive system with their SUVs, many complained the improved launch times were given at the expense of fun. So here’s what they did.
The M5 Competition’s xDrive isn’t your everyday four-wheel-drive drivetrain, it’s actually rear-biased meaning it sends a tad more power to the rear wheels, than the front ones. But what’s even more incredible is this xDrive is capable of transforming the all-wheel-drive M5 into a rear-wheel-drive one by the push of a button, thus sending all of its 617 horsepower to the rear wheels, and cutting off the front ones completely.
6 The Ultimate Four-Door Missile
People used to be able to afford multiple cars, for various occasions – one for the weekend, one to drive on the daily, and one for long journeys. Those times are gone, however, and cars are more expensive than ever, therefore buyers are looking for a car that can do it all. that’s where the M5 Competition comes into play.
There are some sturdy rivals out there produced by other brands like Mercedes-Benz and their E63 AMG, or even Audi with their RS6, but the title of the ultimate four-door missile has to be awarded to the M5 Competition, it truly is a jack of all trades.
5 Technika
Here’s another aspect in which the M5 absolutely excels, technological involvement. More often than not, modern cars can be overwhelmed by the newest and greatest technological advancements in the world, whether is something like lane-departure warning, limp mode, or even just electrically limited speed controls.
The super Beemer has most of those qualities, yes, but it incorporates it so subtly and subdued, that you hardly realize that machines are doing so much work behind the scenes. Take for instance the xDrive drivetrain which can be set to only send power to the rear wheels, that’s only possible thanks to the might of modern technology.
4 Adaptive Personality
One of the best attributes of the M5 Competition has to be its versatility. It has a dual personality, almost like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde if you will. On the one hand, it’s luxurious, comfortable, and has enough room to take your family on a coastal trip, but on the other hand, it’s a purebred racer.
Its adaptive suspension and fully customizable drive modes allow the M5 Comp to be tailored towards your specific tastes and needs, whenever, wherever.
3 Black-infused Details
Let’s talk styling for a moment. The pre-facelift M5 already had tons of black accents all over the car from its diamond-cut wheels to its blacked-out grille, but the LCI took things even further.
Now, its headlights and taillights are almost blacked out, it received even more black trimmings and accents all over. If you were to drive an all-black BMW M5 Competition, you surely would frighten even the most confident gearheads on the road.
2 German-Built Muscle Car
Germany isn’t known for producing any muscle cars, they’re more focused on creating finely-tuned performance cars like the Porsche 911 Turbo S, but the M5 surely has the qualities to classify as a European muscle car.
It has tons of power, can do burnouts thanks to that clever xDrive system, and it’s also a rather heavy car as it weighs more than 4,200 lbs – that’s just a bit lighter than a Dodge Charger Hellcat Jailbreak.
1 Second-Most Powerful BMW
After the M5 Competition’s V8 was developed to produce its 617 hp, it was put into the M8 Competition as well, so BMW’s flagship GT sports car could catch up with the times, but for some dastardly reason, BMW thought it wasn’t enough. So they went back to the drawing board and created and evolved it.
The more potent V8 now produces 627 hp, but it can only be found in the BMW M5 CS. So we guess you can say the only BMW more powerful than the M5, is its lighter, more track-focused brother.
Since the first hand-built model in 1985, the BMW M5 has been an icon of performance. Fast forward 35 years and this expectation and reality still holds true. Now available for the first time as a M5 CS model, it delivers everything we love about the BMW M experience, but with more flair and performance than ever before.
SRDCE TO
The M5 CS is unrivalled in so many ways. A lot of this comes down to the 4.4-litre V8 engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology, which delivers an impressive 635hp. This is 10hp more than the M5 Competition. That translates to 6,000rpm and a peak torque of 750Nm. And paired with the M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, it’s no surprise that it goes from 0 to 62mph in 3.0 seconds.
THE M DIFFERENCE
The M5 CS features a V8 engine that is fitted with optimised turbochargers and a maximum injection pressure of 350 bar. This allows for quicker injection times, which improves the atomisation of fuel. Improvements have also been made to lubrication and cooling. The oil pan has a small front sump and an indirect charge air cooling system, which is extremely effective. The oil supply system also uses a fully variable, map-controlled pump for superior performance during acceleration.
HIDDEN BEAUTY
It’s not just the engine that makes the M5 CS so special. The chassis, which builds on the BMW M5 Competition, features a seven-millimetre drop and has shock absorbers that were initially developed for the BMW M8 Gran Coupé. What’s more, it’s fitted with enhanced engine mounts that have a spring rating of 900N/mm. Why is this important? It essentially strengthens the engine’s connection to the car’s structure, and helps with rapid engine response and the transmission of its power to the drivetrain.
CARBON MATTERS
Carbon Fibre is used extensively on the M5 CS because it is both lightweight and strong. This perfect combination is what gives the vehicle its standard M Carbon ceramic brakes; they deliver superb stopping power, excellent durability, and are 23kg lighter than the M Compound brakes on the BMW M5 Competition. In total, the Carbon Fibre parts contribute to a near 70kg weight reduction over the BMW M5 Competition. Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) is used for the bonnet, the front splitter, exterior mirror caps, rear spoiler on the bootlid and the rear diffuser.
STRAP YOURSELF IN
Nothing sets the tone like four individual M Carbon bucket-style seats. Exclusive to the M5 CS, this seating combination taps into the spirit of M and BMW’s rich legacy within motorsport. This is also seen with the outline of the legendary Nürburgring circuit, which is imprinted on the head restraints.
Other elements include M Alcantara steering wheel with Carbon Fibre gearshift paddles, M xDrive capabilities, and the M Mode button. This allows the driver to switch between ROAD, SPORT and TRACK modes, with the M View in both the instrument cluster and the Head-Up Display when in SPORT mode.
ZLATÝ DOTYK
Almost everywhere you look on the M5 CS, there is a beautiful detail that sets it apart. From the front, the kidney grille and M gills are finished in Gold Bronze. At the rear, the sports exhaust system boasts a quartet of stainless-steel tailpipes. Along the side there’s another touch of Gold Bronze finish on the 20-inch M forged wheels in Y-spoke design, which are complemented by illuminated M5 CS badges on the door sill finishers. Even the six-piston fixed-calliper units at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the rear feature the M logo and are painted in Red with, of course, an optional Gold finish available.
