I had a weird situation this week, when I unlocked all doors from inside the car using the driver controls on the front left door, but the rear right door could not be opened from the outside. The door lock lever inside was showing the lock is open, but the door could not be opened. After locking and unlocking from inside I was able to open the rear door from the outside.
Did anyone experience this?
I could not reproduce this, so it’s hard to bring up at the next service, but it’s potentially a safety issue, so I am a bit worried about it.

The door locks and handles use rods to actuate the mechanisms that lock/unlock/open the door. It’s likely that the switch which locks/unlocks the door did not operate fully one time (maybe due to cold weather or random chance) and thus the door was still locked when you attempted to open the door.
I’d recommend just waiting until you could document it again if it were to happen on a more repeatable occasion.

I had the happen to my car I could only open the door by coming inside and pulling on the handle, turns out the door lock actuator died and got replaced, it was on warranty so I dont know the price but it took like an hour to get installed so it shouldn’t be much.

If the weather fluctuated from «warm» to cold it could freeze door seals too. I washed mine the other day to a similar effect

Every winter I spray some silicone spray on a paper towel and wipe down all the rubber seals on the doors and the door frames. Goes a long way to prevent doors from freezing shut. Don’t spray directly on the rubber the spray gets wherever and is really hard to clean up.

There is a slight chance the cable ball at the handle is overseated and/or bent. If you aren’t afraid of taking the door pad off, you can verify that.

Not to common on these cars but door lock actuators can go. I did have my 22′ do it right after I got it when it got really cold. had to climb in my car and unlock it by hand. Haven’t had a problem since.

I only had it happen once on that occasion, but if/when this happens again, I now have a better idea what to do!

On our 2020 Impreza I have had the exact thing happening on the driver side rear door the past couple of weeks. My wife also noticed it happening.
I made sure the sliding switch was not in the locked position. The next time it happened I could not open the door from the outside OR the inside.
I hit the door lock/unlock button next to the driver seat, and then it opened. Some times when I turn off the car, and hit the open button, get out to retrieve the bags in back, and it’s like nothing happened, but other times it’s locked up.
I’m going to make an appointment to have it checked out, but it’s not a good thing especially if someone needs to get out quickly. I’m «glad» I’m not the only one this is happening to!
