Why is my SOS blinking in my car?

I noticed sometimes the red SOS switch by the rearview mirror flashes in my car. I don’t have a roadside service contract with MB or anything like that and my car is out of warranty. Can someone please explain what’s happening when the light flashes on the SOS? I have a feeling MB is tracking my vehicle via GPS or uploading data but I’m not certain. Anyone familiar with this button/light?

twak: you sure you paid for the dent repair right? LOL
I don’t think MB is going to do that, as far as I know if you read the manual that is for roadside service aside from the wrench icon in your center console. My friend used it before on his SL for service. Have you by any chance press it?

i keep getting the error message on my dash saying Visit Workshop, SOS Error and the Display Defective message. my dealer said that since i don’t have SOS, its messing with the dispay. they are a bunch of flippin’ idiots if you ask me. no one has given me a straight answer.

I believe all W210 E55 has SOS in there center console (wrench icon) and as far as I know (correct me if I’m wrong) that is one of the standard feature on our cars. You can have your local MB dealer to take that notification off, what it does is telling you that you don’t have subscription. same msg from my friends C32 and it list as 1 malfunction ea. time. talk to your SA or call MB to inquire.

Actually, my car has done some strange things when that SOS light has blinked in the past. I think the radio turned off briefly, but I suppose that’s normal considering it’s intended to be an emergency function. Oh yeah, my car has no more dents, anywhere

I don’t think that is normal if you did not use your SOS. Normally if you press that you will hear someone talk to you & ask you whats your emergency (live person) I guess there is something wrong with your SOS system then.

SOS fun! I have the same error on my 2001 clk 430, i bought it used. BUT when I press it, the radio shuts off (or turns down all the way) and it makes a call to the Emergency Service, it actually connects, and i get to talk to someone and tell them about my day. I don’t have a subscription, but I guess the previous owner did.
I’ve been to the stealership to try to turn off the light. They say that if you don’t have a subscription, then the light and message will ALWAYS show up. I told them, but it connects when you push the button. He said to call MB central and check to see if I have a subscription till when?
I don’t care about the service, I just want the light and error message off.

Let me check out the other code. but for now I wouldn’t change the battery as this code you have indicated another issue. The batteries are no longer available form Citroen in any case Stu and were £78 when they were available.

Yes, still RD4 radio.
As batteries are unavailable I was thinking of replacing it with a similar one. If/when I got around to it.
So reading the diagnosis above, if the unit has a fault it flashes the orange LED until the fault has cleared, so when the LED stays off, fault no longer present, the LED goes off after 5 mins(ish) so fault ‘fixes’ itself.
I can’t disconnect the unit because it’s connected to the airbag system. So, for now, I will check the antenna link and just ignore it as the next step is to replace the unit, if available, or with one from a car breakers that may have same issue.
Could it be that the system takes a while to connect to the 2G network, therefore, what will happen when the SOS system ends, will everyones buttons flash as no contact can be made to the service?
Did all C5’s have this button?

I’ve been in contact with Citroen regarding this for my own reasons regarding the cut off of the 3G network towards the end of this year.

After a call back from Citroen customer services. It would seem that later vehicles fitted with independent telematic units (so Aircross vehicles in this case with SOS and the Citroen Chevrons buttons in the roof) don’t use 3G or 4G. They use a satellite for communication.

However if your vehicle uses a SIM card (mostly older vehicles fitted with RT3, RT4, RT5 or with a services Module (like the NG4 Navidrive 3D) then it may be a different story.

So if not sure, best contact Citroen Customer Care to find out how this applies to individual vehicles.
