Anyone else have a bad vibration sitting at idle while in drive or reverse? ~50rpm above idle the vibration goes away and it’s Cadillac smooth inside. If I shift to neutral while stopped the vibe goes away because it will idle a little higher.
Maybe I should plug a scanner in and see if I can read the exact RPM, and somebody else can do the same and see if the numbers jive. 2022 S King Cab 4×4….

I’ve heard of this problem in the past from 2nd gen 4.0 owners. Many raised their idle by 50 rpms to cure the problem. This is the first complaint I’ve heard from the 3.8 crowd though.

The only way to raise idle rpms in a Gen 2 is to employ a TUNE. This is software that replaces factory SW which has the idle rpms locked down. I suspect Gen 3 will be the same. It’s an emissions type of thing.

In response to the original question, I haven’t had a rough idle in my 3.8L ‘21 or my “old” ‘18.
Increasing the idle speed is not the answer. There’s a problem causing it. Idling faster just covers it up.

There was no reflash to be done on my truck per the production number and it being a 2013.
But they did raise my idle 50-75 and it totally smoothed out my problem, No more vibration noise while in gear at a stop.
I’m glad it was such an easy fix and hopefully if anyone ever has to deal with this they will read here what the fix is.

Many times, all the dealer does is perform the idle air relearn protocol. The greater body of work is that dealers cannot modify idle rpm. There is no «screw.» The dealer would have to futz with the software to increase rpm.

Whatever you want to call it dude. Anybody can read several examples on here of people who have solved their idle vibration problem by having the dealer raise the idle. I’m out.

I’ve got a 2020 which as you know has the 3.8L. ScanGauge indicates it idles at or around 650 RPM. That is with no accessories on. With lights on RPM drops to around 625 or so. I don’t detect any vibrations. to be honest it’s one of the smoothest idling vehicles I’ve owned.
Will be interesting to see what you get for numbers.

If the idle is at factory specs and it is rough, raising the idle is not the answer. The dealer needs to determine why the idle was rough. Last thing you want is the roughness to come back after the warranty expires because raising the idle only masked the problem, and now it is on yur dime to fix it.

I have this issue as well .I got a idle relearn which helped but now that it’s getting cooler it’s happening more often again . did u ever get this taken care of and if so how?

Thanks for checking those #’s JetBlack. I’m between 625-637 using Autel AL619 scanner in all configurations. Lights, AirCon, etc. it’s always the same. When turning those items on and off or shifting from P to D or whatever, the idle drops down to 575 before coming back up and it really vibes. I should have mentioned it’s audible to a droning noise, real low frequency. After screwing with it for 20 mins, I have a splitting headache from that frequency of noise. I wonder if this could be trans/torque converter related….

I checked again to day after the engine was nice and warm. At idle RPM was around 650 or 675 with no accessories which in P. With all accessories on including the AC I saw my RPMs jump up a little to around 700. Moving my shifter around had no impact. I never saw it drop down to 575 like you experienced on your end. Are you seeing any codes? I would certainly make sure your hoses and clamps are nice and tight, but other then that I would know what to check. I would bring your truck to the dealer and get it serviced. Definitely keep everyone posted.

You have a 2022, it’s under warranty. It’s not your job to figure this out, it is the dealers job. The idle should be rock steady and smooth. It may dip momentarily when you put it in drive or reverse, but come back up within a second. It also may run 25 to 50 rpm higher when the AC compressor is on. If the engine idle speed varies on accessories and transmission selection, the computer is not controlling the idle, most likely because it doesn’t know it is supposed to control the idle and that is most likely the gas pedal sensor. But that is for the dealer to figure out.
It is interesting that the owners manual says to check the emissions label under the hood for the idle speed, but the emissions label under the hood does not have that information on my 2020. Anyone else notice that information is missing?

Nah, no codes. I only asked the forum to arm myself with any info I could when I do head to the dealer. Wanted to know if they were all like that, or what. I noticed it on the first drive, but thought it was because it was new and breaking in.
My dealer isn’t easy for me to get to, has no courtesy cars and takes forever. It will cost me hundreds to drop it off and rent cars and lost time.
I’m sure the mechanics are good but the service writers are terrible. I brought my ‘19 in there before trading and had two rattles I wanted them to fix, they didn’t address either and said it was my plastic bed liner making the noise. I complained about air blowing from the vents while on floor only and they “changed the blower motor.” Cmon man. And some other things I can’t remember. I looked at the sheet afterword and nothing I told him was close to what he wrote down.

Mine does this. Pretty annoying at stop lights. They have the idle set so low for fuel economy but being right on the edge causes problems like this. My 20 did not do this, my 22 drives me crazy. If the AC is on and the idle is bumped up a little, it goes away. The super low idle also causes the trans to clunk when it down shifts coming to a stop. My 20 and 22 do this.

So, my truck hit 1000 miles today and it seems to be idling faster and smoother. Maybe coincidence. The faster idle fixes a couple problems that are extremely annoying so hopefully it is permanent.

I still haven’t dealt with mine, but at nearly 2000 mi and 36 days of ownership it’s the exact same as the first 10 mins I drove it. Prolly gonna be a while before I go to the dealer.

my 22 does this as well. lift the hood and you will see hoses going to the engine shaking around at idle as well. you can feel it from the butt and your hands. weird stuff but smoothes out by touching the peddle slightly, but soon as you let off and go back to idle it vibrates again..anyone try adding high octane fuel to see if maybe that was the cause or if it would help? think ill try the next fill up to experiment with it but its noticeable for sure

Doubt it but give it a try. It’s pretty annoying. I suspect it is a sensor or needs to relearn the idle speed. Mine is almost OK with the AC on since it bumps up the idle speed. But I typically don’t have the AC on during the winter. Sometimes it almost feels like it might stall coming to a stop, too.

I have a 2018 4×4 sv A few months back,
I noticed low RPM’s as well , took to dealer as it was under warranty, The mechanic asked me if I disconnected the battery at any time, and I said I did because I put in a new battery, He says well whenever you disconnect the battery it throws off the ECU settings, dealer reset so there is no rough idle, in the meantime I bought a cable that connects to the OBD BELOW dash, and I connect that to a external battery so in the event in the future if I ever have to disconnect the battery the memory settings stay the same via the OBD, just got to be careful with the negative and power leads as they are hot when you disconnect the battery from the engine area so you don’t get shocked! I don’t like the fact that when you disconnect the battery without doing that it messes up the ECU settings, but at least I know now what caused the low idle speed, just a FYI

My battery has never been disconnected. But I get other weird stuff like ABS system failure warnings, etc. Truck has a elec problem somewhere. And, I would add that the 2022’s are completely different from the Gen 2 trucks.
