Niro EV has been brilliant the past 2 weeks, however this morning it won’t start. The system turns on, but I can’t shit into drive or reverse. It’s as if the system can’t sense my foot on the break. Battery at 60%.

I’ve tried the spare key fob and also tried plugging the car in to charge a bit, but all to no avail.

Has anyone else had similar issues?

Nope nothing, just been sat in here trying to figure out what’s wrong. Haven’t done anything different to the previous 2 weeks. I tried moving it with the key fob before I got in and that wouldn’t work either.

Randomly it has just started working again. Just sat in the cabin for 30min looking online for solutions, had another go at starting and it worked.

I don’t know if this is a good thing, if this becomes an intermittent issue, it’s hard to demonstrate the problem to the garage ‍♂️

Hi. We have same issue. I have posted mine under ‘ Kia eNIRO won’t engage drive’ post started by @VT 44 in May 2022. Seems the car may have been immobilised by the computer but I’m still to check my CCTV coverage to make sure no one was tampering with the car overnight.

Sounds like the old Flat 12v battery issues these cars have always suffered with, now that you’ve powered car up and sat in it for 20mins the big battery has charged the 12v one up enough for car to now power up correctly .

But Kia Connect app says battery fine. I didn’t power mine up for more than a minute or two so I’m thinking more likely the immobiliser in my case.

Can’t say for other poster with same problem but I got in and out of car repeatedly and re-traced my actions to account for such a brain burp.

I had a test drive in a Niro EV 2 last weekend and I had something similar happen to me.

Car wouldn’t go into Drive or Reverse, but turned the car off and back on and it worked first time, didn’t really think anything of it so never mentioned it to the dealer.

I’ve since gone and ordered one.

Good move. This is likely a glitch or simple user error pushing the car into immobilised state. A short wait and it cancelled out. It’s a great car and really good fun to drive.

I’ve had this issue happen to me twice. Tried a number of things to sort the issue but in the end, disconnecting and reconnecting the 12v battery fixed the issue. It wouldn’t engage into drive no matter what else I tried. Definitely a glitch in the start up sequence as the orange immobiliser icon stays on and the ready to drive message never appears when turning it on. I will be reporting to the dealer but it’s good to know it’s not just me.

This seems the best emergency solution, just ensure you have an accessible spanner available. It causes a hard reset of the computer system, just leave no power for a few minutes.

We’ve had our Niro EV4 for all of a week and had this happen twice — 1st time a shortly after we had picked the car up and had it parked on the drive, and again yesterday when we used the remote climate option to cool the car. We had the little orrange lock symbol on the dash. The first time I was able to connect a 12v charger and that instantly fixed the problem. Yesterday, the car was able to recover itself in the 10 minutes we were asking our friends if they had some jump leads.

We then went to our Sussex EV meet and a number of drivers of cars said «You need one of these jump packs — I always carry one». So I’ve ordered one, and then charged the 12v from 12.3 volt to 13.2 after driving home on my 12v charger. It should be fully charged after driving the car for 20 miles anyway, so was suprised to see the low voltage.

So either the battery has a dodgy cell so the voltage drops or its not being charged correctly. I’ll be talking to our dealer tomorrow.

Kia Niro is a reliable road companion, but its a machine with hundreds of interconnected parts, and like any other machine it sometimes fail to deliver normal operation. In this article we go through most common causes of Niro breakdown and how you can fix the problem.

The most common cause that hinders normal starting operation of your Niro are dead key fob battery. However, dead high voltage battery, clogged fuel filter, blown fuse, empty gas tank, immobilizer error or any fault in the electrical system can also cause your vehicle not to start.

If your Niro has push start/stop button, then its possible that your vehicle may not start due to weak key fob battery. Don’t worry, you can still start your vehicle – the battery is only used to send the signal for locking/unlocking. If the key fob battery is empty, the door no longer locks or unlocks at the push of a button. The doors must then be opened manually. The immobilizer is controlled by a passive transponder. Passive means, among other things, that the transponder in the key does not need its own power source.

How to start Kia Niro with dead key fob battery

If you have a model of Niro which only has a key fob with start/stop button and no place to insert a key, then try placing your key fob as close to the start/stop button as you can and then start the vehicle.

Tip: You can try starting your Niro with its second key. It will also rule out any other problem with the first key, for example, water damage.

3. Ucpaný palivový filtr

The fuel filter of your Niro does not wear out like a mechanical part, but it gets clogged by dirt and airborne particles and clogs over time. The permeability of the filter drops, and so does the fuel pressure. To a certain extent this doesn’t matter, but if the fuel filter is too dirty, the engine will no longer perform at full capacity and in some instance may not start at all. Cleaning is not possible, you can only change the filter.

4. Porucha palivového čerpadla

If your Niro’s fuel pump fails, then the engine won’t start. The pump normally ensures that the necessary amount of fuel is passed from the tank to the injection system of the engine with sufficient pressure.

Bez funkčních svíček motor nenastartuje. Samotné zapalovací svíčky často nejsou postiženy závadou. Místo toho se uvolní zástrčkové spoje na zapalovacím systému. Pokud je skutečně uvolněná pouze jedna zástrčka, můžete problém vyřešit sami na místě. Pokud zapalovací svíčka selže, musí být vyměněna v dílně.

7. Poškození hlodavci

Rodent damage can be another reason why your Kia Niro won’t start. The animals crawl under the vehicle and bite through cables and wires. In principle, this can affect all vehicle systems such as the fuel supply, the oil supply or the power supply.

Poškození hlodavci lze obvykle rychle vidět pohledem do motorového prostoru. Škody způsobené pokousáním hlodavcem lze opravit v dílně. Zde se připravte na poměrně vysoké náklady.

8. Porucha motoru

Although very rare, but it can also be the cause of the breakdown of your Niro. If a vehicle has an engine failure, then nothing works anymore. It is not uncommon for the driver of a vehicle to be responsible for such damage. Typical causes include tearing of the timing belt, incorrect fueling, insufficient oil, hydrolock, overheating of the engine, or continuous driving in an excessive speed range.

Since Kia Niro is equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD), a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located.

To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Niro. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the wire connected, you should turn the ignition on. But be careful not to start the engine. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be falsified. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer and model, you usually also have to type in the engine and vehicle ID number. For exact troubleshooting, always check whether the information is correct.
