Well I have answered my own question — The under dashboard USB socket presents 5v across pins 1 and 4 (as normal for a USB), when the ignition is on.
I can now doctor a USB extension lead to disconnect pins 2 and 3. If that is not done the TomTom thinks it is connected to a PC.
Now I can have the sat nav mount positioned on the extreme right of the windscreen, with only about 4″ of visible cable.
Better than an X3 or Q5

You know Volvo sell an adapter for the cubby hole or if you have the latest model an A pillar mount with wiring harness?

This USB is for service use , for doing long software downloads at the dealer .

Hi, I have jsut got my new XC60 and also want to mount a sat nav. I had a look at the RH pannel and it didnt seem to want to come off. Can you plaese confirm which one it is, and how you get it off.

Hi, I also wanted a neat mount for my TomTom. I found a range of mounts on the TomTom web site and also an internet site called DSL Developments. They sell the attachment for your particular device and the corresponding mount for just about every model of car.You can site them away from the screen aswell which I find is best . They are excellent, easy to fit but not exactly cheap.
