Hi guys, can any of you who now have the Sync 3 give us a review of it and what I can expect when I eventually get my car.
I’ve looked at the YouTube vids but they all seem to be American based, I’m after a good UK review/walk through.

Short answer. Its nothing amazing or something to wow the users. But it just works, especially compared to Sync 2. And Sync 3 speakers are much better. Its the small things added together with the Android Auto and Apple Carplay make it much much better. If you can use Sync 2 you definitely can use Sync 3 as everything is much easier to use and navigate within the system.

I’ve been giving mine a lot of thought recently and I can’t decide if I like it, or if it annoys me enough to dislike it.
Example of a ‘like it’ moment:
Press voice button, wait for prompt. «Please say a Command» and say DAB. This tunes in to the last DAB station I listened to, and the same preset bank I store my favourites on. If I use the ‘Source’ button I have to go through AM, FM1, FM2, FM3, DAB1, DAB2 etc etc. Voice command is better.
Example of a ‘FFS’ moment:
Press voice button, wait for prompt. «Please say a command»
«Navigation. Please say, search for POI, search for favourite, search for address. «
«Search for POI. Please say Nearby, or In a town»
«In a town. Please say Town Name»
(say any name you like. I have had issues with Porthcurno (Cornwall))
«Please say a category»
«Please choose a line: 1 Parking. 2 Park Inn. 3. and so on
Results pop up as address lines on screen, not on map in relation to you or where you want to go.
«Please pick a line»
«Please press the voice button and say Set as Destination»
Once you have done all that you will get navigation to the address you picked.
I can’t ask it to send a text to someone (Message partner to advise that I’m running late) or send my own voice reply to a text, only canned responses.
I can’t long press the voice button and use the phones built in assistant to carry out a command.
I can’t say ‘Navigate Home’, I have to say Navigation, favourites, 1 (to select the home location as line 1 in the results).
All that and the fact android auto is useless on my sync 3 system (keeps disconnecting randomly without warning) and you can’t use Sync navigation with Android auto playing your music. and if you are able to use Android Auto and want to switch to DAB/FM/CD the voice command button now operates Google assistant so asking for DAB results in a Google search.
If I had to be honest, I would say that there needs to be a decent update to make it more user friendly and fluid. It’s not awful, but some things really should be better.

I am hoping CarPlay and Siri fair better when I start playing with it tomorrow. I like Apple maps so think I will find myself mainly in CarPlay. Though a bit rubbish if you have to leave it to use DAB.
What I would have liked is wireless CarPlay. Though I understand it may have wifi connectivity for updates. Is this correct? If yes then there is a chance wireless CarPlay could be in a future update.
Though from history I don’t think I have every had a car that through it’s life has had a meaningful stereo firmware update.
Only really Tesla I think has this nailed.

You can use DAB as your audio source with AA and ACP in use, but if you select the phone as your music source it is more difficult to move back to another source without pressing the ‘Source’ button, which then go’s through the AM/FM/DAB preset banks I described above.
I tested ACP at the weekend using a friends iPhone 6S and it worked fine, no drop outs. Possibly due to lightning cable being better quality.
Yes, Sync 3 has WiFi connection built in so you can use your phone as a hotspot to download any updates (none are available currently). I’d also like to see the phone connect over Wifi, but I can’t see it happening.
Tesla are on my car shopping list in the near future.

Voice control with Google Assistant and Google Maps, Waze coming, native like Spotify usage etc etc. And there is a lot to get when they update it more from car stats like washer fluid levels etc when Android Auto gets updated (it already has those in screens that will come eventually).

Don’t use other sources than BT/phone but I know what you mean. But it’s about the only annoyance compared to the Sync 2s many many idiotic menus and whatnot.

My main tip would be to set the display mode to night. The blue colour of the day mode looks tacky!

That’s a very good point.
I had mine set to auto and found it would flick between day and night modes when going through tunnels/under dense tree’s etc. It was a huge distraction and I ended up putting it into night mode.
Occasionally it forgets and reverts back to auto.

Have you tried ‘Destination home’ instead of ‘navigate home’? That’s how Sync 2 works.

I can’t say ‘Navigate Home’, I have to say Navigation, favourites, 1 (to select the home location as line 1 in the results).
To achieve this you can simply push voice button. Say «destination home». Then it will navivgate for you to your configured home address.

First impressions and already love CarPlay. Even if just for Spotify. Not had chance to mess more so will give a better review later.

my apologies for Typos/ spelling in advance I used an iPad.. And regretted it half way though
Sync 3 based on SYNC 2.2 SW in an a KUGA (the wife’s)
Where to start(this is all MY OWN opinion but I am an infotainment engineer) SYNC 3 IS a good update from Sync 2. Due to Goodbye Microsoft..hello QNX, Good bye resistive touch screen hello Capacitive touch screen & some much-needed UI updates to just make the UI Flow better and increase the size of the buttons.
As already written above 1st thing to do is put the system in night mode ( Now you can remove your sunglasses)
The Home screen is useful providing a ½ screen navigation view to enable you to see current road name and speed limit and quickly see options for routes without having to specifically open Navigation. The other half nicely splits Media and Phone. I must rant that When connecting to CarPlay You lose the Navigation View & the ability to get to the embedded NAV. This is one of my biggest issues with SYNC 3. When I have No data connection I have to Unplug or turn CarPlay off to search a destination, this is just Apple’s idea of a joke when they wrote the spec i am sure but its not funny!
AUDIO BT/DAB/FM Nothing major to comment on, it just works like you want it to, I do wish that Radio presets where shown on the home screen like SYNC 2 ( it may be possible but it’s not automatic) Steering wheel switches still allow you to skip between presets it’s just not the same. Embedded Voice don’t bother with it unless you’re calling a contact, or doing something that is quicker by voice. Note that Barge in does work with it so you don’t have to wait for «please say a command» (you can also enable expert mode). For every thing else IMO just ask your connected smartphone to do ( Ok google or Hey Siri) are always listening when connected if Bluetooth paired / USB cable connected.
Highlight from my side is on Android Spotify works with FORD applink, so you don’t need to connect the cable and you get a good experience. Playlist, Album art etc. Yes I know other apps work if they are open and running but as with the below what else do you actually need When you’re driving?
Android Auto /Car Play over promised underdeveloped and lacking any apps or features I really want/need day today.
Android auto, Google maps is good, but the map colours are so bad it’s still designed for smart phone not cars. I don’t need it very often when I do, not having a Data connection seems to be an issue, Waze where is that still waiting. AA’s home screen is good, but more because of google now and Android notifications.
CarPlay I can change my podcast in the car or see my phone contacts or my recent call list in another way or hey get Deezer instead of Spotify or one of the 100 $H!^ US radio apps. It’s just far to bounded by driver distraction rules (which i agree with somewhat) to be useful. E.G I want to search for a song on Spotify (this is how it goes )»oh no search dam, ask Siri dam, I have no data connection oh what playlist is it in? Dam I can find it oh well
Navigation works much better than sync 2 (Pinch and zoom now work’s) and Search is 1 box style and the keyboard now no longer requires about 14 presses to input a 7 digit postcode. The GPS is not that good though, it seems to have mind of its own in showing youe where your not and it’s funny how the arrow moves around bends and roundabouts. Almost as if it was never tested with one.
Stability is a mixed bag it can be fine but then system crash/Freeze/black screen at random and without warning. With how complex these systems are I understand this. But it still very annoying when it just has a SW FIT.
SW update checked a few time but not seen one since January.
