Toyota, Datsun, Pinto, Vega, Honda, Fiat were all considered. the Volkswagen Rabbit made it. It’s the best car in the world. It’s an everyday hero, an affordable, sensible family car that still conquers tracks across the globe. It’s the car that Volkswagen didn’t even want, that now defines their brand. It invented the whole idea that a car could be cool without costing you a mortgage. If you’re on a budget, it’s awesome; if you’re not, it’s still awesome. Jeremy Clarkson said that this is one of the most influential cars ever. I would wack myself with excitement. I’ve owned 12 of them. Someone’s not counting! This is everything you need to know to get up to speed on the Volkswagen Golf GTI. C’monnnn. family hatchback, a legend? Really James? Opravdu? Well, yes, smartass. See, back in the 70s you could buy either an affordable car or if you were rich, you could buy a high end sports car like a Ferrari or Lamborghini, all that good stuff. But for the working man a Ferrari wasn’t really an option. A car within reach looked something like this: a Volkswagen Beetle. Which sucks. Yeah I know people like them and I’m gonna get flamed for that, but they suck. Sure, it’s cute, cus it looks like a bug, and it’s like an icon, but for somebody who loved to drive, hit the open road or wind through a canyon the Beetle. I’m trying to think of the right word here. sucks. Volkswagen had their own problems with the Beetle, namely that by the 70s it was already 40 years old. Awwwww, you fu— World War 2 hadn’t even started when the first Beetle rolled off the assembly line. And here they were, still selling them. They needed a new car to replace it, something affordable, yet sexy — like me. So in 1974 they finally released the Golf. It looked good! Had a nice little efficient engine, surprisingly roomy, it was a good car. People liked it. It sold pretty well. Volkswagen was happy. And yet the Beetle refused to die. Even with the Golf on the market the Beetle just kept on chugging. Enter Anton Conrad, quite possibly the most important marketing executive of all time. See he had this crazy notion that maybe average people might like a fast car. Podivný! Specifically looking at the youth market, Conrad pitched the idea of a high performance variant of the Golf. Basically same car; bigger engine. Mm, recipe for success. What did Volkswagen say? Ne. Volkswagen didn’t think there was enough of a market there. And besides that, the Golf was never designed to be a performance machine. In response: Conrad did it anyway. He f*** you Dad, I’m my own man! Dad, what about you! F *** ty! Working with a 6 man team, he shoved a 1.6 liter in-line 4 that developed 110 horsepower into the Golf. Hey, I’ll admit, 110 horsepower doesn’t sound like a lot, but this was 1975 we’re talking about, people were using rotary phones, and this car is tiny! You ever seen a Mk1 Golf? The result was a sensation, Volkswagen only planned to make 5000 GTIs, by the end of the original run they made 420,000! 420 dudeeee. The Golf GTI handled well, it drove fast, and still had as much space and sensibility as the base model. Cool didn’t have to live on a poster anymore, anyone could drive it! And oh yeah — it killed the bug. In 1979 the Beetle finally ceased being sold in the United States. Although we should mention this awesome 70s GTI we’re talking about never sold in the United States. America got a variation called the Rabbit GTI, which didn’t have the European engine, which means instead of 40 more horsepower than the base model, it got 1 more. Jeden. One horse. Sorry America. Sorrrry. But the little hatchback that could wasn’t content to just be a great car, it went on to change the entire industry, and the world. For one thing, to help produce the Golf, Volkswagen bought an old Chrysler plant in Pennsylvania. This was the very first time a foreign auto manufacturer opened up operations in the US, which paved the way for many others for years to come, helped the US economy. Boom. More broadly, the GTI is the car that brought cars out of the 1970s funk. Up to its release, the energy crisis of the time and a general economic. forced all vehicles to get smaller, duller, and more boring. The GTI was a shot of adrenaline in the arm of the whole industry and led to the performance car renaissance of the 1980s, right on through to today. Icons like the Skyline GT-R, Mazda MX-5 can trace their routes back to the GTI’s idea of speed machine for the people. Even if you’ve never wanted a GTI, odds are, there’s a car out there that you did want that only exists today because of it. That means anytime you see a GTI on the road, you’re looking at a hero. You owe your life to dental hygiene. And if you drive a GTI, you’re a hero too. And it’s won pretty much every award from pretty much every car magazine on the planet. Oh and one other thing — over the years it’s sold 2 million units! One million — 2 frickin’ million, idiot! That’s how a people’s car becomes a legend. It’s like The Rock of cars. You like a Focus ST? Thank the GTI. And the Mk1 was just the beginning. The Mk2 saw the introduction of a twin-cam, 16 valve engine, and got Recaros. The Mk3 got the VR6, a 2.8 liter narrow-angle V6, with 172 horsepower and one of the sweetest exhaust notes in the history of cars. Mk4 got the 20 valve 1.8 T, nevarlose. Mk5 was ugly, and got independent rear suspension, the 2 liter TSI and plaid seats. The Mk6 is basically a good looking Mk5. And it’s still available today. You can buy a new one. Current generation is called the Mk7, because it’s the 7th one, duh. And there’s a GTI. It has a 2 liter turbocharged engine, with direct injection, and 230 horsepower. And there’s an even more rowdy one, called the Golf R, which is all-wheel drive, has 292 horsepower. That’s almost 300 horsepower! The Golf itself has a lot of offshoots too, like the Jetta, and the Cabrio, which is not available anymore. And there’s a lot of competitors to the Golf. The whole hot hatchback category, which it invented, is now loaded with choices. And some of them are pretty good. But even today, the original is the gold standard by which all others are compared. And none of them have the legacy of the car whose original purpose was to just be a little bit better than a Beetle. This is everything you need to know to get Up To Speed on the Volkswagen Golf GTI. What cars do you want to see us cover? O co jsem přišel? Co jsem udělal špatně? How can we do better. What do you like about it. Like my hat? Dej mi vědět. Please subscribe, comment down below.
I am concerned the car is too fast for a new driver, but he insists it is not. Is the jetta or golf a better option? Or can he handle it?

The jetta has the same engine(s) as the gti so don’t think that just because it looks less sporty it actually is, it all comes down to how responsible is he, there are plenty of 15-17 y.o.’s who drive these and do just fine with it, I myself am only 19 and this is the quickest car I’ve had. You have to realize that any car has the ability to speed, (golf, mini cooper, chevy astro, etc.) the best solution is to plop him into one of those driving school safety deals, My mom threw me in one when I first started driving (had a 94 towncar) and even though I was less then pleased at first I definately learned alot, plus the money saved on insurance is always a good thing

Honestly I’m glad I didn’t start out on a GTI because having other slower cars kinda made me respect the cars I had even if they weren’t my favorite. I started driving on an SUV, then got a Corolla which I blew the engine on after it had something fixed even though the mechanic said it was okay to drive, fortunately it cost «only» 5k, then I got a Mazda 626 ES-V6 which had leather seats and a more powerful engine. The car was quick. Even though it still wasn’t what I wanted it was a move up and I appreciated it. It also «only» cost 5k. Then I got my GTI and I was completely ready for this car because driving the other cars had taught me that there’s a time to have fun in a car, but you should always drive responsibly.

Yeah it really all comes down to the individual. Like dlight said, have your son take the course, I learned from it and the insurance is definitely a plus. I’m only 22, and the GTI is the first fast car I’ve had but I’m sure I could have handled it at 16.
Although you can speed in any car, some cars are definitely more tempting than others. I’ve noticed myself speeding alot more in the GTI without even thinking about it. I drove a big slow truck before the car and it didn’t climb to high speeds as easily as the GTI does. Just takes getting used to, but if he’s a new driver, he probably won’t even have that problem.

Yea have him drive in something else for a little bit just a beater car then after a while you can get em a GTI. Though I know a kid that started with a V8 M5 and he drives very safe doesn’t speed, so it really comes down the kid.

Although I will admit that the GTi is perhaps too fast for me. It is also the first car I can say is «mine» and I love it too much to endanger it. Unft. that doesnt mean I wont take hard turns and run into mailboxes like an idiot. Im sure you can stand back, look at your son and tell yourself that this car is or is not right for him. Best of luck O0

You can get yourself in just as much trouble with a 70HP beater as a 700HP monster. Granted. the more HP. the quicker you can get in trouble. that really boils down to the responsibility of the driver and not the car.
If you feel your son is responsible enough to make rational decisions about his driving, then I’d say go for it. Personally. I wouldn’t. The GTI is not an unreasonably powerful car, but IMO it is too much to entrust to an inexperienced driver, no matter how responsible they might be.
I know it’s cliché but you really do need to learn to crawl before you can walk. A year or two in a smaller, less powerfull used car will make him a much better driver, with more respect for the car and the road (not to mention a little humility never hurt anyone). If he were to get in a wreck, a $5k vehicle is much easier replaced than a $25k one. Save the nice car for graduation, or college. If you insist on buying brand new, go with the Rabbit, or a 2.5L Jetta.

Find him a used 06/07 Rabbit. If my son was 16- he wouldn’t be getting a GTI.
However, the safety factor on the Rabbit/Jetta is definitly a plus for a young driver.

Like they are all saying, it depends on the kid and how mature he is. I have a friend of mine that trusts me driving any of his cars and I’m only 20, but the cars that hes had were all worth $50k+ and fast but he trusted me when I was driving them and I’ve been doing that since I was 16. Heck, I’ve been driving his 1978 500hp Corvette since I was 16 after I learned how to shift the car (its a trick-shift auto bc at the time he didnt have his right leg). And now he is trying to sell it and won’t sell it to anybody under 25 bc of how much power that car has got and how much it can get you into trouble/killed bc it has soo much power.

My first car was a VW Scirocco with about 140hp. Too fast and totalled. Any car can be too fast, it’s the kid that is the variable in that equation.

Honestly, I’d «Graduate» him up to a car with any power. Cause honestly, the chances of any teenager wrecking their first car is VERY high. Both myself and my middle brother (youngest just started driving. ) both have wrecked/totalled our first cars. Both cars had much less power than the GTI and Jetta. Buy a cheap beater car, see how he handles it and see if he is responsible. If he proves himself, then I’d upgrade him to this. Think of it as a test in true responsibility, cause a car is a controlled weapon. Or go for a used Golf or Jetta without the 1.8T engines.
Oh, and I’m 22 for the record.

Oh, and just to let you know, ANY car that is speeding or driving wreckless is more prone to cops. I’ve seen modified cars driving below the speed limit while mini-vans are speeding past them and getting pulled over. Just cause your car is modified, doesn’t mean you’re going to be an idiot and drive wild, though modified cars (silly **** happy idiots thank you) have a pre-destined reputation to speeding. To me and I’m sure most all of the members here will agree, modifying your car just means your car is more than just transportation to you, it’s something you enjoy and want to put your hard earned time and money into it so it can be that much more.
Just keep it on the track.

Lol, that’s just something my dad has always told me.
Dad: Who cares, a car is just transportation.
Me: To you maybe. To me, it’s a hobby and something I enjoy. You can stick with your little Taurus, but I’ll enjoy my car everyday and smile every time I start her up.
Expensive hobby. yes. But it’s better than him collecting MODEL car kits that cost as much as I’m spending on my GTI.

i started out in an 03 chevy s10 extreme 5spd was a lil spoiled but 06 corvette c6 rims on it magna flow exhaust system fpk2 intake the works then I got bored of a truck so i bought a 98 audi a4 2.8 which was decently fun to drive not my favorite kept breaking also. So I finally said one day screw it im going to buy a new car im almost 21 now and the gti is great. You can always take it easy and not speed, theres certain times and places for that, thats all hes got to know but if hes just some kid that wants it just because its quick and new and doesnt know how to drive i would start him in something older its really up to you and how well you know your kid goood luck.

I dont’t mean to discredit the people on these boards, but if you take a look around you’ll realize that the majority of the people here are very young. As a result, they tend to have a young person’s mindset when answering your question.
Now, I’m only 22 but I consider myself wise beyond my years. DO NOT buy your son a new sporty car for his first vehicle. It doesn’t matter how mature you think he is, it’s just a bad idea. When I was 16, I begged and begged my parents for an Acura RSX Type-S. They refused, instead letting me drive my father’s old Toyota Avalon. I ended up totaling that car before I was 18. What did I get then? My mother’s old Volvo V70 XC. I HATED that wagon, but I’m glad my parents had me drive it for a while. Even after we got rid of it due to its terrible habit of breaking down every other week, I got stuck with a 4 cylinder Camry — chiefly because it has 8 air bags. I drove that car all through college, and now that I’ve graudated my parents have agreed to buy me a car of my choice. That’s why I’m on these boards researching the GTI.
Trust me, your son will hate you for it but get him something safe and reliable for his first car. He’s more than likely to get into a wreck within the next year or two, and you don’t want to have to write off a one or two year old car. Plus, if he takes his car to college I can guarantee it will get beat up — joyrides, friends riding in the back, what have you. I parked my Camry for 2 years in a fraternity lot and it’s been beat to hell.
Once he graduates from college, consider getting him a nicer car. Experience matters on the road, and there’s no point in letting your son ruin a brand new car. Give him a few years to mature and he’ll really appreciate the new car when he finally gets it. I know I’m going to =)
