This is the Mk8 VW Golf GTD – the ideal version if you want your Golf to look sporty and be fun to drive, but who also do a whole load of motorway miles.

If you imagine that the new VW Golf GTI is the 400-metre runner in the range, well the Golf GTD is the 5000-metre runner, so it’s still quick, but it can also go a long way without effort. Indeed, it looks like a regular Golf that’s been given a pair of trainers and a couple of sweatbands.

It costs from around £33k and comes with a seven-speed automatic gearbox, 18-inch alloy wheels, Matrix LED headlights, keyless entry and three-zone climate control. And where the Golf GTI has red highlights, the GTD’s are silver.

The VW Golf GTD gets the same basic interior as the Mk8 Golf, which is a good thing. It’s all very minimalist and classy, with barely any buttons or fiddly details. You get a sportier steering wheel, plenty of sporty stitching, and sports seats with chequered trim. You also get mood lighting with 30 customisable colours. Oh, and there’s even a snazzy start button that pulses red before you start the engine.

As standard, there’s an 8-inch infotainment system and a 10-inch digital driver’s display but you can pay extra to get a pair of 10-inch screens instead. Both displays come with special GTD-specific graphics and you can customise the driver’s display using buttons on the steering wheel. There’s also the option to use voice commands to control lots of the car’s features – just like in the standard Golf.

The GTD is the Golf for the person who wants to look like they’re in a GTI, but actually values economy above hooning pace

The 2.0-litre diesel engine produces 200hp. Even though that’s 45hp less than the GTI, it still makes it the most powerful diesel Golf ever. It also pumps out 400Nm of torque, so it should feel pretty rapid. VW says its two catalytic converters and dual AdBlue injectors also make the GTD’s engine one of the ‘cleanest diesel engines in the world’.

The new Volkswagen Golf GTD gets independent suspension all-round, which should help it feel agile through the corners. You can also pay extra to have it fitted with adaptive dampers. These let you stiffen everything up for hooning down country roads and soften the ride for cruising home on the motorway.

You can personalise these settings through the infotainment system, too. So you can fine-tune your favourite setup and save it.

It’s the sporty-looking Golf for those who want to go a long way on a tank of fuel, but it’s perhaps not that exciting

Up front is what Volkswagen describes as one of the cleanest diesel engines in the world.

It’s a 2.0-litre turbodiesel that produces 200hp and 400Nm of torque, so the GTD is no sluggard. All this combustion-engined mumbo is put down to the tarmac through a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox. The upshot is that the Golf GTD can cover the 0-62mph sprint in just 7.1 seconds and carry on to a top speed on the eye-opening side of 150mph.

The Golf GTD can also manage an average of 54.3mpg, and emits 137g/km of CO2.

Indeed, Volkswagen refers to the GTD’s motor as one of the world’s cleanest diesels, thanks to what it refers to as ‘twin dosing’. In essence, this refers to the introduction of two SCR catalytic converters with dual AdBlue injection, which VW claims has significantly reduced the production of nitrogen oxide (NOx).

There are loads of neat little cubbies dotted around the Golf GTD’s cabin, and as is usual on a VW, the front door bins are lined, which means stuff won’t slide around or rattle. They’re big enough for a decent-sized bottle, too. A fair-sized area resides beneath the centre armrest, and there’s a pair of adjustable cupholders on the centre console.

Talking of the centre console, there’s a long box beside the gear selector, and a dedicated area beneath the dashboard for storing your phone.

In the rear of the cabin, the door bins are pretty large, and each front seat comes with three seat-back pockets – one large enough to hold a map and two smaller ones that’ll accommodate phones.

The VW Golf GTD has plenty of space for the driver and front-seat passenger, and the standard sports seats are both extremely supportive when you’re checking out how grippy the tyres are, and comfortable when you’re going from here to a long way over there.

There’s also lots of adjustment for both the front seat and steering wheel. For those in the back, the GTD feels just as roomy as the common-or-garden Golf, so there’s plenty of legroom and headroom for a couple of adults. However, just beware that the two large front seats can make the back feel a little gloomy.

The 381-litre boot is the same size as those in lesser Golfs, so you’ll be able to fit in five carry-on flight suitcases. It’s also easy enough to flip down the rear seats, which reveal a 1,237-litre load area that’s decent but not class-leading. If you need more carrying space, perhaps a Skoda Octavia vRS might make a decent second choice.

There’s also an adjustable boot floor that eliminates the step behind the folded rear seats, so you won’t have any trouble sliding in heavy items.

The boot is also a decent, regular shape, and features a range of bag hooks and lashing points so that you can ensure that anything you’ve bought remains in the same number of pieces when you get home as it was when you walked out of the shop.

It’s all nicely built, and sporty touches such as the sports seats are present and correct, but does it feel special? Perhaps not

The new VW Golf GTD’s interior is lovely, because the dashboard and door trims also feature a neat honeycomb design, which emphasises the sporty theme.

A central touchscreen dominates the dashboard, and below it lies a row of touch-sensitive pads. However, these are likely to frustrate as often as they work as intended.. Below these lies a panel that allows you to adjust the car’s drive settings, but this requires too much concentration to hit accurately.

The centre console is quite control-free, and features only a starter button that pulses red, plus a button for the handbrake, and a tiny finger-sized selctor for the DSG automatic gearbox.

Ahead of the driver sits a digital driver’s display in place of conventional dials, which can be configured as you fancy.

The rest of the interior is suitably roomy, and the two front occupants sit on large sports seats, which are trimmed in the traditional tartan, although in the GTD the design is predominantly black and silver.

The Volkswagen Golf GTD has an 8-inch screen front and centre on the dashboard, and beside it is a 10-inch cockpit display.

Both screens respond quickly to inputs, be they by touch or using the buttons on the steering wheel, and the graphics are all sharp and clear.

There’s a strip of touch-sensitive controls beneath the screen that lets you control the cabin temperature and audio system volume. In practice, these can be annoyingly imprecise. Still, there’s a voice-control system to allow you to manage settings, although the similar system in a BMW 1-Series is much better.

You can mirror your phone using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, but only the Apple system allows you to do this wirelessly; you’ll need to plug your Android phone in using a cable.

Both systems allow you to use Google Maps and Waze through the infotainment display.

So i have had my 2013 GTD for a little over 4 weeks1200 mainly motorway miles and even driving like an old lady my fuel economy plain sucks. I’m lucky to get 390 miles to a tank!!

The car has full service history last serviced 10k miles ago (on time and distance) and other than poor fuel economy runs without fault.

A quick scan with VCDS only flagged one error which was to do with a failed Landa sensor replaced under warranty but the dealership forgot to clear the DTC.

My previous Golf’s all GTD’s (Mk5 and Mk6) have returned no less than 440 miles to a tank (46 MPG) on a similar run so i’m a little confused as to why the lack of economy.

I had a Mk6 before and could get 80 miles more on the tank, though it was the size that was making the difference, MPG on the Mk7 has been about 5% better according to 15k miles on Fuelly.

The tank is smaller, but one would still expect the range to be way over 400 miles, if the OP is driving as described, my GTI PP DSG easily would pass 400 miles on longer commutes, even urban commutes is seeing over 30mpg.

My previous MK6 GTD would when driven with a blend of spirited and restrained driving, most of which is on the motorway (75-80%) would return atleast 46MPG.

Callipers aren’t sticking, tyre pressures are correct so i’m a little confused

My 2014 GTD is getting me circa 460 miles to the tank and I’m driving it like I stole it. Just started this week to use it for commuting so expecting that to improve as its motorway 50-70 mph for 30 miles.

The average consumption has not been reset since new, it’s done 8,000 miles and I think it’s showing 46mpg.

This is a bit left field but are you noticing how many litres go in when you refuel, do you fill till the pump clicks off. Im wondering if theres a fault with your tank sensor indicating its empty when its not.

My 2014 GTD returns 430 to 480 miles per tank in normal use, it will break 500 on a good run. I find it very sensitive to the ambient temp, colder weather has an adverse effect on the MPG.

Unless you’ve logged the fuel used over several thousand miles it’s difficult to do a fair comparison, however well you do it «btb» won’t give you an accurate reading, just a guesstimate, that’s why i always suggest using Fuelly or similar.

All vehicles will return lower mpg’s in colder weather and yes around 10% seems the norm, although you say you are wary of brim to brim, whatever way mpg is calculated then there should be an average mean between the various ways and still the 11 gallon tank in the OP’s GTD should be returning him over 400 miles (even if it is just 440) between fills if he really is driving it frugally.

Sorry to hear of your mpg woes, here is my experience if it’s helpful — i think you may have a underlying issue with your GTD

MY GTD is returns me 49 mpg on average — mix of use. i average about 530 miles a tank. in comparison my mk4 pd150 averaged about 55 mpg and i would get 650 miles out of a tank

53-60 mpg sitting at 80/85 mph on a run -depending on temp/wind direction and around 45 mpg around town.

Takes a good 7 miles to warm up averaging 39 mpg before this!

I’ve only 5000 miles on the clock so far so hope this improves slightly as engine runs in.

One of the gripes with my GTD is the tank level indicator. When the fuel light comes on you have a good 60/70 miles till 0 miles left on the indicator — i once drove a further 50 miles after 0 miles to empty! And still had space left in the tank! annoying!

I would say from my experience the GTD is 46-52 mpg car if you do a mix of use including motorway and enjoy it! Certainly not a 67 mpg even if you nurse it around probably more like 60 mpg.

I found the mk 4 is better on fuel in general. But mk7 is better on fuel when your having a bit of fun!
