Mercedes = very expensive to repair and maintain. Over 100,000 miles even worse. Also it depends on the price of the car and the depth of your wallet.

It’s been said many times here before. «there’s nothing so expensive as a cheap Mercedes.» Like most European vehicles, the basics (engine, transmission, etc. ) will most likely last a long time, it’s all the OTHER stuff (electrical, A/C, electronic, etc. ) that can be frighteningly expensive to maintain. Buy only from whom you know, require documentation of all required maintenance, check CarFax and Auto-Check, have experienced M-B mechanic check the vehicle over.

I own a 1998 E230 Mercedes which has clocked 255000 km (158500 miles). I’ve owned it for 12 years with very few issues. I service it at least once a year with a reputable company who do a good job. Sometimes I drive it to visit the kids across country without any problems. It’s as strong as a tank. I’ve been told to never sell it because newer models are not as reliable as mine. My first Mercedes 230E (1983 model) went up to 400 000 km — another champ. I can’t vouch for newer models but believe that Mercedes is a good brand and is nice to own. Just look after it and give it services as recommended.

I am on my fourth MB over the last 24 years. As a family we have 2012 e350 (90,000 mi) 2012 ML350 (84,000 mi), 2014 C240 (52,000 mi) and 2009 ML350 (132,000). Annual maintenance is important, but aside from the higher than average Service A and Service B maintenance schedules, cars are wonderful. A reputable and certified European Motors service shop or even YourMechanic.com are good alternatives.

love my 2001 S500 and do the maintenance myself so it doesn’t hurt much but agree with the other reviews here that while the drivetrain is tough as a tank with reasonable care the luxary features that make it so much fun can be predictable to fail right on schedule. I have had to fix the plastic plumbing connector where the heater hose goes through the firewall (coolant loss), had the drivers window stick going up/down, battery dead due to current leak, washer tank leaking still, fuel filter causing slow start (Just changed) left mirror turn signal leds replaced, newest is #3 cylinder skipping on a trip, now dissapeared. You really will need to invest in an iCarsoft mercedes code reader and have time to enjoy all these little challanges.

I have a 2011 C300 Sport with 110k miles on it. I purchased it with only 40k miles and it’s been BY FAR the best European car I’ve owned. In the 70k miles I’ve put on it, only one thing has broken (water pump) and it was only $500 and took 30 min. I’m now looking to replace the front brake pads for the first time and they’re only $220 installed. I had an 2002 Audi A4 3.0 Avant that between 80k miles and 180k miles cost me $10k+ in repairs outside of tires, brakes, and oil changes. I finally parted with it because it needed California Catalytic converters which were going to set me back $4k, on a car that was worth $25oo. Long story short. they (Mercedes) sells roughly 70k of that model every year so there are plenty of them out there and they’re not very complicated. The higher end you go the more issues you may find.

Two years ago I got my MB GLE 350 4Matic 2016, with 14000k miles on it. I’m happy with my car so far. No major issues other than the fact that I usually have to spend $70 +/- a week in premium gas to go to work, and well, when I compared that with the money I used to spend on my 2003 Honda Civic, there is a big difference. However, my MB is safe, strong, makes me feel good when I drive it.

I have seen many taxi in Europe in cities (most people consider it to be the worst kind of driving because of the stop and go) and yet many of the Mercedes Benz Taxis exceed 350000km, I have even rode in one that blew me away at the smoothness of the engine (diesel) with 800000km and the cleanliness of the interior. My belief is if you maintain it well it will last long and today I would believe this of all cars.
