What’s the best way to transport wheels and tires inside? Can they all fit standing up (how to secure them) or do they need to lay down and be stacked? These are stock 21″ in case that matters.

Can you do something like this? I needed to carry mine over 250 miles.

X3 with seats down, should be similar to my 5-series wagon for size.

What are the ratchets attached to near the front set. This X3 has the spare so there’s a dropoff when the seats are folded that will make it hard to lay the wheels flat versus a 5-series wagon.

The trunk width is 43.5″ and the rim combined width is 36″ ignoring tires. The trunk depth at the bottom is 36.25″ while the tire diameter is about 28.7″. In theory, assuming the seat can actually lock in a more vertical cargo position like the manual claims, they might fit standing up. The catch is height might not work as it’s 30.5″ without the spare, but only 27.5″ with the spare. So I think vertical will not work in an X3 with a spare, but might work in an X3 without a spare.

This spare placement design is lousy especially given the spare nearly fits otherwise and isn’t full-size despite the space lost.

My wheels have a decent amount of rubber ‘bulge’ to protect the rims.

Used the eyes at each corner of the trunk floor. Wove the straps through the top rim spokes, worked fine to hold the position and ensure safety, if I had to stop quickly.

They are the standard adjustable, on UK build sport seats.

Makes sense as if you stop short, the front anchor point will hold the upper tire from sliding forward, at least as long as things don’t get crazy. I should get some rags to prevent straps rubbing on the rims.

First of all you bag your tires. There’s no reason to load dirty tires/wheels in your car. After bagging them, they fit fine in the car and don’t need further restraint for a short distance — like 250 miles. How often do you wreck or roll over?

Sorry, but can’t agree with overthinking it. Why not add some restraint?

Something like 100kgs in motion, if you have an impact, isn’t staying in the rear of the vehicle unless restrained. Why add to risk?

Someone might have an idea that works well and I may not immediately think of. I’d rather plan ahead than try to figure this out on the fly. I’m not asking about bags and blankets. Objects that can roll around, slide on each other, and get damaged easily need extra thought. For example, since this car has the spare tire hump floor, it might be possible to stand up all four wheels in the valley of the rear seat to tire hump junction. Then strap the wheels to the front anchors. That would free up most of the trunk for other things. There’s still no where good to place the cargo cover since that storage is eliminated with the spare tire hump. I think the cover would have to come out to provide clearance for the wheels, but perhaps not.

I just got a great set of new wheels and tires for my car, but unfortunately I will need to drive them to be installed — I can’t swap wheels and tires in the garage where I park my car (and, living in an apartment, I’m not inclined to do it on a NYC street). Has anyone carried a set of wheels and ties in their car before? Any tips on how to fit it all?

i have a couple ideas, but would love to see any examples others have done. I won’t be going far, but I’d like to get all 4 wheels there in one trip.

Thanks everyone. I was hoping to get 1 front wheel in the front trunk, one in the rear (maybe on the engine), and two in the passenger seat (probably standing up next to each other).

in terms of the seat, it’s wide enough for two wheels and I would think if the passenger seat is all the way back I can squeeze the wheels in. I think one front wheel should fit in the front trunk, so it’s the 4th wheel that may be a wild card.

I’m giving you a 0% chance of this working out. That said. if you actually make the attempt. PLEASE post pics of how hilariously far off you were in your estimations.

FWIW, I know that you will be able to fit 1 tire on your passenger seat, but probably shouldn’t. A friend brought me a dismounted tire this way, which was fine, but I don’t think I’d want the weight of a mounted and inflated wheel/tire sitting on the seat.

Thanks — I’m revising my expectations down and looking at backup plans. I’ll probably still try to fit the wheels in (doesn’t cost me anything), but I may have to rent an SUV for the morning to get these mounted.

WW — how did you fit the tire in the passenger seat? I’m not too worried about the weight (my wife sits there all the time and weighs more than a 50lb. wheel and tire) but I’ll be sure to bring a blanket to protect the seat

The difference is that your wife’s weight is distributed across the middle of the seat where it’s supposed to be. Unless of course your wife is like that one guy here whose wife has a pointy butt that’s wrecking his seat. But probably not.

My friend had the tire in a bag (obviously) but I think most of the weight was toward the front lip of the seat on a rather small patch. Since it was an unmounted tire and didn’t weigh much, it was fine. And if it was a car I didn’t care about much, I probably wouldn’t care to put a heavy one on. But if you did this and it left a permanent indent on the front edge of your seat. well. I don’t expect you’d decide it was worth it.
