I’ve had this laptop for about three years.
The battery has reached its end of life. And it’s charging backwards. By that I mean, as the system reports that the battery is charging, the charge value is going down slowly instead of up. It’s down to 2% now.
Most laptops I’ve used detect the battery failing to charge and shut off the charger to prevent the battery from being damaged, but this laptop continues to attempt to charge.
I have seen what happens to batteries that overcharge, everything from swelling and damaging surrounding components (like the keyboard) to much worse.
Is there a way to disable the charger in BIOS or in software?

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I’d be happy to help you with the Battery issue.
Use the computer BIOS to enable ship mode —
1.) Plug in the computer to a power source, and then turn on the computer.
2.) On your computer, press and hold the Power button for at least five seconds until the computer turns off.
3.) Start the computer, and then repeatedly press the Esc key until the Startup Menu displays.
4.) Press F10 to enter the BIOS.
5.) Select the Security tab.
6.) Set up the BIOS administrator password.
NOTE: The Disable Battery on Next Shut Down option is grayed out (unavailable) if the BIOS administrator password is not set.
7.) Select Advanced, and then Built-In Device Options.
8.) Set the option Disable Battery on Next Shut Down to Next Shut Down.
9.) Press F10 to save the changes.
10.) Restart the computer.
11.) Turn off the computer.
12.) Wait 2 seconds, then unplug the computer from the power source.
If the above option is not available in BIOS, this means the computer does not supports «Ship Mode».
If the issue still persists, I’d suggest you Contact HP in your region regarding the battery replacement. I’m afraid, the BIOS settings that you are looking for are not available.
If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it’s most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile Name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.
