Anyone ever have Subaru change thier plugs. and when, how often and how important is it to change your plugs? I have about 60,000 miles on my sti and im taking it to subaru for an oil change and and to change the plugs and they said it would be about $260-270 for the oil change and to change the plugs. is that a little high or is it just me? i was gonna have them clean my in jectors also but he said the toatl for the oil and plugs and the injector cleaing would be about $370-380. Help oh yeah and do they have to take out my CAI «Cold Air Intake» ? i dont like the sound of that subaru guys taking my CAI off and putting it back on

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that STi’s use iridium spark plugs. Im not sure how much they are but that might have something to do with it

The plugs are kinda a pain to get to but not that big of a deal. There is a thread in the how-to section that shows how to do it. I got my plugs for about $35 shipped from online vendors. You will save ALOT of money doing them yourself. I did mine at about 70,000 so I could have nice new plugs for my tune.
Also, the oil is really easy to do yourself and you get the satisfaction of knowing it was done right.
Im sure there are a few members on here (including me) that would have no problem helping you.

It is a good idea to change your plugs every 15 to 20K miles. Yes, our motor uses iridium plugs and you can get a set of stock replacements (full set of 4) for about $35 from rallysportdirect.com and a couple other places.
There is a good write-up in the How To section that is very well written and shows you step by step what you need to do, and it has pictures!

There is also a how-to for changing your oil, which anyone with simple handtools can do.

But like PartySub said, I’m sure someone could give you a hand if they are in your area.

You’re paying $275 because Subaru probably calls for 1 hour to change out the plugs on the STi. So at $85-90/hr for labor you’re looking at 1.5 to 2 hours for the oil change and plug change. So that right there is about $150 just in labor. Then probably $50 for the plugs and $50 for the oil and filter after dealer markup. So their quote of $275 is about right.
Do it yourself and save yourself at least $200!!

Holy crap, I just looked up the time Subaru suggests to change the spark plugs.

That right there is why it costs over $200 to have the dealership change your plugs. If it actually takes more than 2 hours for a factory trained subaru tech to change that’s pretty pathetic

The stock plugs should be good for more than 20K miles.

I was thinking the same. It used to be on old V8s a yearly thing to change plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc. But spark plugs and oil both are supposed to last longer between changes now. Subaru recommends 60k for the plugs.

Ok well i just got back from picking up my car and i told them i wanted to keep the plugs to look at them. If you say why well i have another thread in this section about buring oil and a puff of blue smoke when ever im WOT and shift and I wanted to look at the old plugs. I asked subaru to look at them and see if im burning oil at all and when i asked the guy he told me no they looked fine no signs of buring oil.
Now i dont know anything about old plugs and stuff but i looked at these and the tips were black and the blackness went about a half inch to an inch down into the threads and they smelled like oil. Again i dont know if thats what old plugs look and smell like but what do i know? Subaru also said that «Oh on a stick car its somtimes normal to get a little puff of smoke whenever you shift» i dont think so. Now mind you im stage 2 tuned but i dont really think that should justify a puff of blue smoke when i shift WOT. But they said everything is fine im not to sure though. gonna save some more money and maybe in june get a comp/leak test. what do you guys think.
