I want to reset my ECU but i dont want to have it done by the dealer. My friend whom has a 06 Infiniti G35 said there should be a way to do it without using dealer assistance. please help.

no problems, after putting on my headers and exhaust i would like to reset. i was told if i reset the ecu and drive the car hard, the ecu will adjust the to the changes after 30 or so miles to harder driving condidtions making acceleration, fuel management, and air flow a little closer to my liking

It’s supposed to «force the computer to re-learn»
If you reset your computer, I honestly don’t see what it’s «re-learning» with a change like a intake and/or exhaust changes. They are MINOR changes.

reset it back to stock? I think you need to have a dealer or person with software flash it with the latest gm file. i have the vector tune and i have cleared CEL’s by unplugging the battery for 15 minutes but my tune is there still.
maybe you mean just to reset CEL’s. listen to the guys above.

’06 and ’07 GM Factory Service manuals each have a paragraph at the front of the engine section that if you replace either HO2S sensor you should clear all codes to reset the computer to start it relearning the sensor all over again.
I don’t think they’d waste the printing space if it wasn’t important.
Anyone with a code reader with erase button can do it — try autozone.
The reason for him wanting to do it is not for a maintenance or code being thrown issue. he made modifications and was «told» to reset his computer.

Manuals say to delete codes whether or not codes are present to reset the ECU to relearn the O2 sensors. Like Nike. Just do it.
It relearns the new flow characteristics — like changing the base LS exhaust manifold to the extrude-honed manifold (or header). It’s big enough of a change around the sensor that it needs to relearn. Fact is the O2 will learn the new flow characteristics after some time but why not start it off fresh from the base line?
O2 sensors don’t read any flow characteristics, that’s the job of a MAF sensor pre-combustion. O2 sensors (narrowbands) read on a head range and communicate to the computer in voltage according to heat measured. If someone just changes their exhaust manifold, it’s not going to change anything but the velocity and scavenging effects of the exhaust system. The first O2 sensor is ONLY used for gas mileage purposes which means at idle and low cruising speeds / throttle positions (which is known as closed loop). When under full acceleration, it enters power enrichment, so it IGNORES the O2 sensors for any type of fueling purposes and only relies on the air metering device (in your case the MAF sensor).
The first O2 sensor is nothing but a way for manufacturers to revolve around 14.7 air / fuel, the second O2 sensor is only for knowing is your catalytic converter is clogged or not. That’s it. It has nothing to do with flowing characteristics.
To address the first part of your post about deleting codes.
He is NOT resetting the computer to get rid of codes, he’s only doing it because someone told him to do it when making a modification.
