We liven Houston and we have dogs in our SUV on a regular basis. In the summer it is important to be able to leave the engine running with the A/C on while parked. We always lock the doors and have no issues. We are very close to buying an Ascent Limited and we wondered if we can lock and unlock the doors using the key fob with the engine running?

Haven’t tried that one although I’m curious. My plan was to use the remote start and set that to as long a time as possible. Just lost my little pooch so I haven’t had a reason to try it yet.

It won’t let me do it. Although I haven’t tried manually locking the door. I was trying from the key fob. I’ll give it a try with the door itself.

I don’t believe the Ascent or any push button start vehicle will allow you to lock the doors with the engine running, unless you are in the vehicle. The remote start will work perfectly for you but the car will only run for 10 minutes, then you’ll have to restart it.

Lock Ascent with engine running? Of course . just not like on a German or a patrol car or other where the vehicle is designed to do this conveniently.
Předpoklady:
1. push-button start
Kroky:
1. Turn on vehicle
2. Ensure you have key fob with valet key in your possession
3. Lower driver side window
4. Open driver door
5. Exit vehicle
6. Close driver door
7. Lean in driver window and lock all doors via switch on door
8. Use ‘auto-up’ functionality on driver door window
The vehicle is now locked with the engine running. Since you have the fob, the transmission will not shift out of ‘Park’
You didn’t specify re-entering the vehicle but the valet key will unlock the doors.
I know this works on a 2015 Outback and 2018 Outback — so am taking a leap of faith that it works on my Ascent. Haven’t had a dry cleaning run yet so cannot confirm.

This works on my 2020 Ascent, but the car will only unlock with the valet key. I tried his method above with both driver and passenger windows down, just in case, and sure enough, the car would not unlock to get back in with the key fob, so you push the little square silver button on your key fob, and pull out the valet key, and it opens the driver door.

Agree on the above post. I went out to try this myself before reading it. I didn’t receive a valet key so I was unable to get back in to the car without using Starlink. Had a little «well. crap» moment there!

If you have push button start, you have a valet key. If this is unclear, reply and I’ll post a pic

I’ve used the remote start on two different occasions with my dog inside. Once running into the grocery store and once during a road trip, stopping for lunch. When I ran into the store, I locked the car and remote started it, while in the parking lot and set my watch for 10 min, but I was in and out before that. When we stopped for lunch, it was much cooler and I had the windows open. I just started the car and let it run a couple of times while having lunch.

Attempting above method tomorrow on myself in car first
From old Subaru the process was having an extra FOB and locking one in the car and carrying one

On the key fobs, there is a silver button, you push it and a door key can be pulled out.
You turn your car on, lock the doors, manually unlock your door, open, and manually re-lock it.
Getting in, you remove the key insert from the key fob and unlock the door that way (its for situations where the key fob battery dies and your doors are locked).
I’ve had to show many outback/forester touring owners this method.

What happens if I simply leave the car running and exit with the fob? Will it keep running?
590 příspěvků · Připojeno 2018
As someone who does this frequently yes it will still run and beep a few times at you to let you know it is running.
I do this in the morning when I have my son in the car and forget something inside the house. However I have not tried locking the door at all.

I tried to lock my car the other day with engine running. Wanted to leave car to grab coffee and then come back but doors wouldn’t lock. I ended up turning off engine and then once I left fhe vehicle remote starting the car lol.

I do this all the time with my dog. Go into vehicle settings and turn off Auto Unlock. Open door and manually push the lock button to lock door. Close the door and you will hear three beeps. Car keeps running and door is locked. You have to use the valet key to get back in. I then usually reengage Auto Unlock.

Subaru should make improvements on this, if you don’t lock the door and run into cleaners, coffee shop, day care what have you. Anyone can get in shift to drive an off they go. I wonder if they can use the proximity of the fob to kill the engine the minute the gas or brake is touched, or better yet prevent shifting into drive. Thanks for the suggestion but still wish for an easier way, or at the very least increase run time on app to 15 minutes

I love my ascent but this is one of the feature that I missed from my old Infiniti, able to lock the doors while it was running using the handle lock button from outside.
I tried the suggested method of manually unlocking the door from the inside, get out of the car while it’s running and lock the doors and it still unlocks it. I have the unlock option off in the setting.

Subsequently, were you able to use your key FOB to unlock your infiniti? What model and year was your infiniti?

When I tried this it beeped three times then a continuous beep. But it did lock. Any idea how to stop the continuous beep?

They really need to borrow the keypad idea from Ford. In a lot of the vehicles, In the black of the B pillar they have a keypad. Touch the area and it lights up. Push 2 buttons to lock it. When you come back, touch it and enter your code to unlock. It has been great, I use it all the time, mainly in the summer when we go to the lake. I can leave stuff in the car, close the door and lock it. I am surprised that Ford seems to be the only company doing this and they have done it for ages.

We loved this feature in my wife’s Taurus before she got the Nissan. Saved her booty once when she locked the keys in the car by accident when she was at work in downtown DC, but luckily I had saved the code in the password manager on my phone so she called me and I was able to give her the code to get into the car. I agree that it’s a great feature that most if not all cars could benefit from.

You can use Starlink Remote Start to at least get the engine and HVAC system working, albeit it’s time limited. Turn off, exit the vehicle and lock it. Then do the remote start with the HVAC setting appropriate for the situation. «Do your business» and then return to the vehicle. Enter and do the formal start with your foot on the brake pedal. Continue on your way.

SIMPLE (and accurate) answer: As of 2020 Subaru provides NO SOLUTION to this dilemma. Period, full stop. That’s direct form Subaru America Corporate Headquarters. Everyone I have talked to, including their own rep, agrees that this is a stupid «feature» intended to prevent you locking yourself out of a running vehicle. Truth is that somebody just DID NOT think this puppy through. If you are holding the damn fob, and you are outside. DUH. YOU HAVE YOUR KEYS! Nevertheless, that’s the reality and it is not worth a recall.
There is a clumsy workaround and that is the best you are gonna get, until and unless Subaru issues a patch for the software. Here is said clumsy workaround:
The setting to disable Key Lock-In Prevention feature is a five minute procedure that MUST be performed by a dealer (or someone who can access your car’s software.) Once this is done your key fob will work as per normal EXCEPT as regards locking the car while it is running. You will be able to do that if the fob is inside and the door is shut but not outside or with the door open. (Try putting your hand out the window, just for laughs.) That means that in order to step out of and lock a running vehicle behind you, you must use the button built into the armrest. (The exterior touch sensor is disabled also.)
So you press the button, the lock clicks, you shut the door behind you. Mission accomplished. Now. you can’t get in with the fob. You can’t get in with the exterior touch sensor. You can’t get in with the «secret code» on the tailgate button. Your only option is to use a metal key in the driver’s door handle.
Major obstacle: Those «emergency keys» in the fob are cheesily made garbage. They break very easily. So if you want to do this frequently, as I do in my work as a route service person in the heat of summer, you need a sturdy, reliable key that you can keep on your person. You CAN have a sturdy metal key made.
The dealer will deny this. Subaru will not do it. You need a Toyota key. Yes, you read that correctly. TOY 51-P is the code for the proper blank. Any locksmith can laser cut one face of it to a copy of the emergency key in the fob. However, it will still be too thick to fit in the lock. Now take a grinder or sand paper (it’s only brass) and mill the back side of the blank down to the proper thickness. In about five minutes you will have a key that will let you back into your running car and which is also sturdy enough to hang on your keyring. Total cost, about ten bucks.
Another fun fact: While you cannot use the dash button to open the Ascent hatch while the car is running and the driver’s door is shut, you CAN accomplish this using the fob. Go figure.
