Have your plastic cups or car headlights developed a hazy fog? If so, don’t worry. Cleaning foggy plastic is surprisingly easy, and you can usually do it using things you likely already have at home. In this article, we’ll walk you through your best options for removing fogginess on plastic, including vinegar, baking soda, sandpaper, and plain old soapy water.
Cleaning Cups & Blenders with Vinegar
Soak your cups in vinegar. Fill a small bucket (or your sink) with white vinegar. Submerge your foggy glasses in the vinegar for five minutes. Remove them and check the results. [1] X Research source
Sprinkle baking soda on cups coated with vinegar. If the vinegar dip didn’t help clean your foggy plastic cups, sprinkle them with a handful of baking soda. Alternately, apply a dusting of baking soda to a damp sponge and scrub the cups. The baking soda and vinegar will react, dissolving the film that causes the plastic to appear foggy. [2] X Research source
- Scrub the plastic items with a damp rag until they become clear.
- Rinse the no longer foggy plastic in the sink under warm water. Dry with a soft cloth.
- As the paste removes the cloudiness from the inside of the blender or cup you’re cleaning, you will see the paper towel darken with grime.
Try a lemon juice blend. Combine the juice of one lemon and two tablespoons of baking soda. Fill your foggy plastic cup or blender up the rest of the way with water. If you’re cleaning a foggy plastic blender, run the blender on high for a few seconds, then turn it off and remove the blade (if possible). With your cup or blender bottle still filled with the lemon juice mix, scrub the inside of it with a non-abrasive sponge or microfiber cloth. Pour the juice out when the fogginess has been corrected. Cleaning Foggy Headlights With Vinegar and Baking Soda
Clean the headlight with soapy water. Fill a spray bottle with a few drops of mild liquid soap and water. Spray the headlight with this soapy mixture. Alternately, you could fill a bucket with soapy water and dip a clean cloth in it, then wipe the headlight with the damp cloth.
Smíchejte ocet a sódu. Sprinkle a few tablespoons of baking soda into a bowl. Pour a few tablespoons of vinegar into the bowl. The baking soda and vinegar, when mixed, will produce a fizzing reaction. [6] X Expert Source
- There is no need to carefully measure the volume of baking soda and vinegar you mix. Just add both in approximately equal amounts.
Wipe the headlight clean using the mixture. Dip a clean cloth into the fizzing vinegar and baking soda. Wipe the headlight off using the same back-and-forth motion that you did when cleaning it with soapy water. The mixture will help your discolored, grimy plastic headlight get clean. [7] X Expert Source
- Don’t worry about hurting yourself when dipping your hand in the fizzy mixture. The combination of baking soda and vinegar won’t hurt you.
- When you’ve finished cleaning the headlight with the vinegar mix, wipe the headlights dry with a damp cloth or sponge.

Metoda 3 ze 3:
Cleaning Foggy Headlights With Sandpaper
Soak your sandpaper in water. Before cleaning your foggy headlights, place the sandpaper in water. You should have at least one piece of 1000 grit paper and one piece of 2000 or 3000 grit paper. Allow the sandpaper to soak for 15 minutes.
Tape off the area surrounding the headlights with painter’s tape. Before you begin cleaning foggy plastic headlights, you’ll need to protect the metal area surrounding the headlight with tape. Painter’s tape is usually blue, though it might be available in other colors, and works just as regular masking tape does. Apply the tape in a border around the headlight you wish to clean.
Spray the headlight with water and soap. Fill a spray bottle with water and a bit of car soap. Spray the headlights liberally with the mixture. Alternately, you might dip a cloth into the soapy water and wipe the headlight down using that. [8] X Expert Source
Sand the headlight. Spray the headlight with the water and soap mixture while simultaneously rubbing it with the 1000 grit sandpaper. Move your hand from one side of the headlight to the other with firm, even pressure. Continue spraying the headlight with the soap mixture throughout.
Inspect the headlight. After you’ve sanded the entire surface of the headlight, wipe it off with a clean, dry towel. Conduct a visual inspection of the headlight. The surface should be free of scratches and damage. The plastic will still look foggy. If some scratches or damage are still visible, spray the headlight again with water while sanding it down with 1000 grit sandpaper.
Spray the headlight with soapy water. Spray the headlight with more of the soapy water. Alternately, you could use a damp sponge saturated with soapy water to wipe the headlight down.
Wipe the headlight down with finer grit sandpaper. Continue spraying the headlight with soapy water. Use 2000 or 3000 grit sandpaper to further reduce the plastic headlight’s fogginess. Move the sandpaper from side-to-side while spraying constantly with your other hand.
- If the headlight’s surface is not uniform in appearance, wipe the headlight down again with 2000 or 3000 grit sandpaper while spraying it with soapy water.
- Use only a slight pressure when applying the polisher pad to the headlight.
- This step will remove any haziness that remains from the sanding process.
Inspect the headlight. If the initial coat of polish does not improve the foggy plastic, wait a few moments to allow the plastic headlight to cool. Apply another two small dabs of polish to the polishing pad, then polish the headlight with the rotary sander-polisher again.
- When you’re done, wipe the headlight off with a dry hand towel. Remove the tape surrounding the edges of the headlight.
- At this point, no fogginess should remain and the plastic headlight should be clear. If some fogginess remains, apply another coat of finishing polish, then wipe it away with a clean hand towel.

To clean foggy plastic, all you’ll need is some white vinegar. Try soaking plastic glasses in a tub of white vinegar for 5 minutes, then check the results. If they still look a little foggy, dust some baking soda onto the cups. The baking soda and vinegar will react, removing any leftover film that causes the plastic to appear foggy. For larger plastic items, make a mixture of 1 part water and 1 part vinegar in your sink. Soak the items in the mixture for 1 hour. If you’re trying to remove fog from plastic headlights, you can also use vinegar and baking soda. First, wash the headlights with soapy water. Next, mix some vinegar and baking soda into a paste. Wipe the mixture onto the headlights using a clean cloth. Finish by wiping the mixture off the headlights with a damp rag or sponge. Whether it’s the plastic on your kids’ playhouse, your best food storage containers, patio furniture or even on your lawn mower, this material is prone to scratching and dulling overtime. Thankfully, you can clean and polish plastic up pretty well with basic household products – many of which you’ll find in your medicine cabinet.
We’re taking toothpaste people, as well as baking soda and vinegar. We’ve also included a couple more vigorous methods like heat guns and sandpaper too for seriously effective results on larger items. So whether it’s a cloudy pair of lenses or your favorite colored garden chair that you want to bring up nicely, keep reading to buff all your plastic items up to perfection once again.
How to clean plastic
To get an idea of the attention your plastic item(s) deserves, you’ll want to start by cleaning it. Simply use warm water with a mild dish detergent. The, let it air dry. Next we’ll go through how to remove and polish out pesky scratches, but if it’s staining you’re dealing with, jump to our section on how to remove stains from plastic.
How to remove scratches from plastic
To know which method to go for, you’ll first need to determine how big the scratch is that you’re dealing with. Once the area is clean, run your finger gently along the plastic surface. If your fingernail runs across the scratch with ease then a gentler method like toothpaste and baking soda should suffice.
If however, your fingernail catches, then you’re dealing with a bigger scratch that will need a more heavy duty method like sanding paper or the heat gun. For the latter two methods, we’d advise wearing protective glasses and a mask for safety throughout.
- Cleaning up plastic is surprising similar toremoving scratches from glass– get the lowdown.
Polishing plastic with toothpaste
Using toothpaste is really effective to remove small surface scratches from soft plastics on small household items like frames or storage boxes. You’ll want to use a non-gel paste and if you can find one with baking soda in it, that’s an added bonus. Simply apply a pea-sized amount to a microfibre cloth or cotton cloth and rub it into the clean scratched area using circular movements. Do this for a couple of minutes or until the scratch is no longer visible. Rinse, dry and this should be enough. If not, you can repeat.
Poznámka: If you’re cleaning glasses lenses, use the same method but with a gel toothpaste which is less abrasive.
Polishing plastic with baking soda
Similar to the above method, but you’ll make the paste, of a similar consistency, using equal parts water and baking soda. Apply this to the scratched area using circular motions and a microfibre cloth as above. Rinse, and repeat if necessary.
Polishing plastic with sandpaper
Using wet sandpaper can help level out the uneven surface gradually. This is ideal for bigger scratches on larger surface areas like headlights or patio furniture. First, ensure the sandpaper is suitable for use when wet as you’ll want to soak the sheet for about 10 minutes ahead of treating the area. Then, the trick is to start with a 220/320-grit, progressing to a finer grit which will give you the final finish
Sand lightly in circular motions, ensuring not to sand any of the surrounding area (mark this off with masking tape if needed) and remove residue with a cotton cloth as you go until the finish is smooth and the scratch no longer visible. You may need to build the grit up to as much as 800/1000, buffing continuously until you achieve your desired results.
Polishing plastic with a heat gun
If you’ve a dull or cloudy looking piece of plastic on a lawnmower or on part of your patio set, you can use a heat gun to smooth and bring shine to the surface once again. The trick with this is that you want to heat up the plastic, but not to the point where it melts and smokes (toxic). So, use your heat gun on its lowest setting, and move across the entire surface evenly. You don’t want to stay on one spot for too long. You’ll quickly begin to see a smoother more polished looking surface.
How to remove stains from plastic
If it’s yellow, a grass or another type of stain that is causing your plastic pieces of furniture, food containers and other items to look dull and well-used, try one of the following stain removal tips:
- Ocet: Ideal to use on plastic food containers and the likes as it’s natural. Simply mix one tablespoon of white vinegar per cup of water and soak your items for a couple of hours until the stain has lifted. Bigger item? Spray the solution on the stain directly and leave it time to soak in then wipe down.
- Alkohol na mazání: Or hand sanitizer also is useful to remove coffee or tomato stains. Simply apply a small amount to the stain and rub it in, then wash the area with warm water and dish detergent to fully lift the stain.
- Citrony: Simply rub the stain with half a lemon and let it dry out in the sun if possible. The combo will no only remove discoloration but it will santitize your items also.

Preventivní opatření
- Cover plastic patio furniture: This will keep your items in better condition for years to come as covering playhouses, chairs etc. will stop the sun discoloring them, as well as any objects scratching the surface of them in bad weather. Better still? Keep items inside if you have a shed or garage available.
- Clean plastic regularly: It’s important to remove dust and debris because a build up can lead to deeper scratches which take more time and extreme measures to remove.
- Avoid stains altogether: When it comes to plastic food containers and the like, avoid using these for tomato-based sauces as this is prone to staining. Use glass Tupperware instead.
