Some codes can be reset by cycling the key a few times. Other times the batteries need to be disconnected for a period of time.

thank you Aaron. how long is a period of time usually? 15min., 30 min., hours? Do both batteries have to be disconnected or can i do just one? (pass. side?)

I usually within an hour the codes would have cleared. Disconnect both batteries. Then after disconnecting the batteries I usually touch the positive and negative cables together to get any residual power out of the system. The truck cannot be scanned for emissions because it will come up as «not ready» and that means there is not enough miles driven after the reset to have the systems tests passed.

thank you again Aaron. The reason I’m inquiring is my MAS is coding, i used a mas spray cleaner on it and trying to see if it’s working or not. I have disconnected the grounds on my batteries for at least a half hour. Afterward, when I reconnect and turn my ign. switch to the run position
(without attempting starting) my cel light stays on indefinantly. seems to me that’s not correct. Am i missing something in that?

Ya that’s correct. Same thing will happen if your truck dies while the key is in the run position.
Try starting it & see what happens.

If I buy a basic tuner program such as a hypertec or . will it read, clear all codes as necessary for diagnosing, repair etc? Do they read inj. balance rates etc. for all injection system monitoring? will it tell me if something erroneous has happened or been changed in my stock program?

If you have an Android cell phone— [does not need to be active] you can download Torque Pro-[abt $5] and a buy a Blutooth OBDII port adapter [abt $15]. Then you can read codes and erase them. You can also read injector balance rates, and a ton of other info.

Great, thanks. i do have a droid 3 phone so that will work ok? I will start with that and move on from there. I am trying to get this thing smogged and complete my reg., pay my fines/fees etc. and move on. I just did inj. and a few other repairs @ $5,500.00 but i still have this issue. Money is tight, time is limited and stress is high. good combo lol. I would like to get a good basic tune/program for better economy, little more h.p. etc. but have to resolve this first. Thank you guys for all the replies and help so far.

battery disconnect cleared codes.
I disconnected all terminals, touched pos/neg together on all, let sit over nite, retouched p/n terms and reconnected. CEL turned of after starting vehicle. drove vehicle for about 5 miles +/-, turned truck off, let sit for a minute or two and restarted with no CEL. keeping fingers crossed that the MAF cleaner i used did the trick. I will let the truck sit a while longer and restart w/ fingers crossed the CEL stays off. If it does I’ll run to the smog check place today and hopefully get past this situation.
Did I drive the truck far enough for the system to properly calibrate? Being self employed and financially challenged and having problems with these trucks like this is very stressful. Thanks again to all that offer their time and help.
