OK-so the Toyota remote start just doesn’t seem like a good system at all so I’m looking for a good remote start. The catch is I’d like it to be as plug and play as possible without having to do a ton of splicing. I’ll be doing the install myself, hate when these shops just hack at the wiring even though it’s not seen, so plug and play is important.
What units are out there that will work with the existing factory alarm without having to install a second alarm?
I want to be able to use only one key fob and have it be a two way (tell me truck started).
Will any of the aftermarket one’s learn my existing remote to control the factory alarm?
Biggest question is how will it affect my existing Toyota warranty?

^^ the amount of fuel burned at idle during warm up is so minimal but i agree on the remote start deal. there are no plug and play available for any car out there, not to mention all the splicing of even the best remote units cause excessive resistance in circuits and will cause pre-mature failures of ignition parts and also possibly cause no-start issues. only time i work on remote start systems at the shop is when im removing them to repair another issue, or just to be able to get the customers car to run again.
toyota WILL give you the upmost amount of trouble if you have wiring issues/no start problem anywhere around or related to the remote start u have installed.

Depending on the install cost, you might want to think about just ditching your Toyota alarm and going aftermarket — that way you have expansion capability for sensors (glass break, tile and motion) and other automated features.

I do not know what you mean by plug and play.
the easiest would be Toyota one, there is a DIY on that here.
The other ones still require some skills. For me anything beyond Toyota’s remote DIY is not plug and play.
I went with Viper 5900, good system, but not perfect. It is an alarm with 1 mile range and nice remote as well. But not very friendly with Toyota’s brains. Had to install it professionally with additional modules.
Now they have Viper 5901, that may be plug and play since you preload it for your car before the install and it integrates very well. but has a nice price tag as well. Worth every penny.
For those who do not understand why you need to warm up the truck. I do it so I do not freeze my azz at 6:30 am when it is around 20F, plus my kids get into the warm truck when they go to school.

The Toyota factory remote start works fine on my Tundra. It’s nice to be able to hop in it and go without baby’ing the throttle waiting for the oil pressure to drop and the radiator to warm up (doesn’t help the cold transmission though). At 8 degrees Fahrenheit, I want the Tundra to warm up gently at idle.

It actually does heat the transmission as well. The 5.7 routes engine coolant to a small heat exchanger inside the drivers side of the 6spd transmission. If you let the engine reach normal temp, the tranny will catch up soon thereafter. I am all for the remote start, but if its below 20f, the general rule of thumb is to run the block heater as well. The motto in AK was. plug at 20F. so my truck stayed plugged in almost the entire winter. Combine that with remote start and we are good to go.

. Says it works with the factory alarm system, and is only around $60. Although, I don’t know if is the «2-way» system that you’re talking about, that tells you that it’s started.
I just had a viper (I’ll have to check model # info) system installed on my wife’s 04 Honda Pilot. What a pain in the azzzz! $300 later, and 2 trips to the place (reputable place, actually), the system is still garbage. Sometimes starts, sometimes doesn’t. no way to know (unless you’re watching) if it starts or not. Sometimes when it starts, it locks the doors, sometimes it doesn’t. We’ll be taking it back again this week I guess. I’ve talked with other peeps (assorted cars) with aftermarket remote-starts. nobody seems very happy with them, from what I’ve heard.
It might have something to do with the interface module that we had to purchase. ?

I wouldn’t pay $300 for the OEM remote start. I stayed away from it after hearing that after the truck was remote started and you get in the truck you need to shut the truck down down and start it up again. WTF were they thinking.
Anyway I have the Viper 5901 and love it.

FWIW crutchfield used to, not sure if they still do, offer come «plug n play» type harnesses for their alarms and starters. wasnt completely w/o splicing i think but it got alot of the main connections (power, lights, etc) by plugging them in etc. let me see if i can find something..
ok i cant find it anymore but it might worth a call to see if they carry that sort of thing still.

There isn’t going to be anything Plug and Play that isn’t factory. That’s just the way it is. I personally have a Code Alarm two way remote start that I installed myself and it was one of the easier RS/Alarm combos I’ve ever done (and I’ve done upwards of 300 or so). You will need a module to bypass the factory starter kill that runs about $50 but other than that, any aftermarket system can interface just fine with the factory system.
And I disagree that splicing creates «excessive resistance» in those circuits. if you have ever traced those circuits, you’ll know my splice and solder is TONS better than the factory spade connections and molex plugs that are all over the place. Besides, with our trucks, you don’t even have to run a tach wire since it’s a «ping» start system and all of the connecting wires in the column are low amperage.

Toyota factory alarms turn off when the door unlock wire is pulsed. In other words, any remote starter will work in conjunction with the factory alarm, right along side it.

Actually, if you pulse the factory disarm wire, the doors unlock too. If you pulse the unlock, the doors will unlock but not disarm necessarily.

I have been looking at the Viper 5901, for my own truck. Looks like i might go with that one myself.
Can anyone here tell me how difficult the install is on that system. Also do i need to buy anything else for it to work in my 08 Tundra DC.

I just dug up this tread because I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong with my remote start. Got my truck yesterday and am following the instructions on the little «Remote Engine Starter» tag on the keyring. It is the toyota unit, and it states:
To start engine, pusk LOCK twice in 2 seconds and then push LOCK and HOLD for 3 seconds.
So far so good — it actually does start the truck. It now idles and warms up. I then want to get in and drive off, but to open the door I have to unlock the truck. The remote starter will STOP the engine, though, when I hit UNLOCK on the remote, as indicated on the little plastic cheat card. Engine remote stop is initiated with either pressing UNLOCK once or pressing and holding Lock for 2 seconds. That works just fine, too. However, it makes no sense to me that I would have to kill the engine after a warmup run just to get into the truck. Is that by design, or is there a way to get in without shutting off the engine (I assume using the key may be an option. )

On the Factory start -By design safety feature. Agreed it would be nice to unlock without having the engine shut off, get in, insert key and drive. ? -For the systems that allow unlock without engine kill, do they require the key to be inserted prior to engaging drive? Otherwise whats to stop someone from making off with your truck if you unlock and dont get in right away?

Go with the Viper 5900 or 5901 (I think I have the latter, but not sure). it is a two-way with a 1-mile radius. In the winter, I can start my truck from the train even before it pulls into the station. It is nicely warmed up by the time I get to it. Good luck!!

My toyota Remote start was 500 installed. The only thing I don’t like is you have to shut if off to get in the truck.
Other then that. I have started it every single time before I get in and it runs the full 10 minutes. Winter, summer, whatever. I do not like getting in there and going while nothing is circulated and/or cold. My 08 now has 93k miles on it and I still start it every single day with the RS.

yeah, I figured it had something to do with that. I won’t be needing it much if I can fit the thing in my garage tonight. Gonna be tight. Otherwise, I’ll deal with it, given I’ll also have to get a block heater isntalled and mess with the electrical wire each outside cold start.

Viper 5901
Get it professionally installed by one of their dealers for warranty. The software will need to be preloaded before install and works quite well for me. No need to leave a key hidden, codes work well. You don’t have to turn the engine off and restart. Just a turn of the key lets the truck take over.. (will shut off if you step on the brake though)
I think mine was 7 bills with tilt sensor and Toyota bypass module as add-ons. Took the tech a good part of a day. :tu:

Maybe some lawyer made em do it. Maybe an anti theft thing or a safety thing? I agree, it;s daft. We have a Saturn Aura also that has remote start. Stays running when you open the door, but you do have to put in the key to move off.

I know this is an old thread but I have a question about this statement. If the factory alarm is not activated does it matter if you pulse the unlock rather than the disarm wire?

nope. If there is no alarm activated, then you don’t need to use the disarm wire. just the unlock. If there is no alarm activated, pulsing the disarm wire won’t do anything.

Ok, good. I just installed a remote start/alarm on Sunday and tapped the lock/unlock wires instead of the arm/disarm. Everything seems to work, but just wondering if I should have done it differently.

Guys, if you haven’t installed one of these alarm / remote starts before it can be quite a challenge on today’s newer vehicles with the ignition immobilizers. I used to do this for a living many years ago when the first GM vats systems came out and now those are child’s play. From what I have read the factory remote starts have a limited range for the fobs and have to be shut down before taking off, just what I thought I read.
There are many alarm / remote start combo units that have one brain and are installable with the right tools and patience. I have always liked the DEI line of products for I agree with the suggestion of the Viper although the hornet line is cheaper for the same products. You will need in addition to the main unit, a starter kill relay, hood pin switch, ignition bypass module (allows you to start without the key, but someone cannot just hotwire it) and whatever else you want to add to it. It took me the better part of a day, but I like to hide the wiring (no rats nest under the dash).
I wish I would have taken pics of locations, but the majority of the wiring is under the driver’s dash and kick panel for the wires needed.
