Okay, I’m going to ask a stupid question. Why do we have Neutral on the 4×4 shifter nob? You can go from 4H -> 2wd -> Neutral -> 4wd. Why do we need Neutral, when an automatic transmission already has a Neutral, and a standard transmission, you can put in Neutral by disengaging the clutch?
Sorry for the rookie question. 4×4 is new to me.
David

I’m not sure on every aspect of it. but I know the transfer between the Hi gears and 4L is to be a lot smoother.

sapper87, I’ve heard of that before as well. But, it just doesn’t make sense. If I wanted to tow my truck, why would I put the transfer case in Neutral, when I could simply take the out of gear (i have a manual), or put if I had an automatic, simply put the transmission in Netrual

I’ll take a shot at this question. Even though your transmission is in neutral, the internal workings of the transfer case will still be turning. Look at it this way. If you were towing your ride across country, would you want all that wear and tear on your trnsfer case?

When towing a vehicle and putting the trans in neutral on either a manual or automatic the drive gears are still turning when towing. The parts need lubrication and most use the input side to pump oil to the parts. Even on a manual trans gears off the input shaft sling oil onto the output shaft bearings. On an auto trans the planitary gears are rotating if the drive shaft is rotating. If the motor is not running the pump is not putting any oil up to this gears and will burn them up on a long haul. This is why you see tow trucks picking up rear will drive vehicles from the back and front wheel drives from the front. When a tranfer case is put into neutral the output shafts turns with the driveshaft and the chain that turns the front output shaft slings oil onto the gears in the transfer case keeping everthing lubricated. And the trans output shaft will not turn with the transfercase in neutral.
:SPIN: Did that make any sense .

Yeah, your trans has to be in neutral. You may have to turn the truck off to put the transfer case back into gear if you put the trans into drive with the transfercase in neutral. It just gets the gears spinning and makes it hard sometimes to mesh the gears while its running.

In my Dad’s 95 Tahoe, I think it said something to the effect of when going from 4L to either 4H or 2H, to back up 10 or 15 feet and it’d slide on in.
But, I’m just having trouble with something here. to me, having the transfer case in N, is that not like having your gear selector in N as well? You won’t go anywhere.

MI_Roadhawg, thanks for the clarification, but I guess I’m still not getting the reason for it. I understand what you are saying about the drive line components turning while the vehicle is being towed, and thus not getting oiled. But if this is so bad, then why don’t 2wd vehicles have the same feature? Won’t they incur the same wear and tear to the drive line components? I think you said that answer was that tow truck drivers lift the vehicle according to the wheels that are connected to the driveline. Well then I ask you, how is that any different from putting a 4×4 in 2wd, and lifting the truck by the back wheels?
Quite honestly it seems like the Neutral gear is a solution to a problem that really doesn’t exist. Realistically, our 4×4 trucks in 2wd aren’t any different that a straight 2wd truck, but yet we get this gear to disengage the transfer case and 2wd trucks dont.
In my case, having that N really messes things up when shifting to 4LO. The shift is so hard, shocking to the truck when I go to 4LO, you’d think my tranny just dropped when shifting to it. I try to follow the directions of going 2-3mph and shifting, but it just seems so rough, because I have to pass N, and then hit 4LO. Anyone elses truck shift this hard?
MI_Roadhawg, and everyone, thanks for your answers.
David
